Multi-year deal = we'll have you for one and have the choice of saying no after that, just like a one year deal but without sounding like "we've signed Nico Hulkenberg for this year, but we don't want him to feel bad as 1 year deal sounds like we're holding out for someone better in the future...deal"

No mention of Perez in the official announcement - and the picture on the website shows a driver with what looks like Di Resta's helmet!

Hulkenberg on a multi-year deal at Force India. Isn't that a bit stupid? There might be place at Mclaren or Ferrari next season.

There could well be a clause that allows an exit if a top team offers him a drive.

Having worked for both teams, Hulk is probably in the best position to choose. Though clearly the engine has a large part to do with his decision, I wonder how much it says about what Sauber is able to achieve with one of the best wind tunnels in F1 (for instance).

In F1 contracts are meant to broken. If he gets an offer from Mclaren or Ferrari I'm sure it will trigger a clause that will allow him to leave. Likewise if he DNFs 6 races in a row, Force India are allow to drop him.

Sergio Perez will drive for McLaren in 2013 after the team announced a “multi-year” deal with the Sauber driver.

A thrilling line up for Force India then.

Can't excited over Hulkenberg once iota to be honest.

I'm happy he is staying in F1 at least. I was really worried because of the problems with his height.

Glad to see Hulk is with a good team, and with the way things are going at Enstone losing out on a seat at Lotus may not be such a bad thing to have happened.  I wonder if Perez will be his teammate.  That would be a very strong driver line up for FI.

I think if FI signs Perez they could bring the battle to Lotus for 5th and just maybe and i mean just maybe beat them.

Well remembered, Perez had this contract. Too bad it has not made any expectation we put on him. Although it is difficult to do something relevant in the MP4-28, but he was not so well in many moments of the season this year.

I think too much is made of this issue. The argument really only applies ceteris paribus.

The chaotic/random nature of the tyres, error-prone/slow drivers, gaffe-prone teams, pitstop variability and resultant penalties as well as inferior strategies are regular occurrences that lose much time over a race distance than a driver carrying a bit of weight around.

If everyone was Red Bull and Vettel inch-perfect every weekend, only then does the argument really hold up. As it is, the quality of the F1 field as a whole is not high enough, and certainly not the mid-field Hulkenberg will in theory be racing against.

I imagine Vijay Mallya would let him go, like he did with Fisi.  He has said before he wouldn't hold his drivers back from going to a top team if they had an offer, and has proven to be true to his word there.

It may just be a midfield seat, but it's better than having the same seat I have on race weekends.

Good for him to sign a long contract. Would be stupid to be there for only 1-year in hope to get a seat from a bigger team. That "tactic" almost ruined his career I guess.

Now there's chance to build something

I'd be surprised if there isn't such a clause, surely the big guys have their eyes on him.

At least F1 for Hulk in a possible solid mid-field car.

I hope, next year news won't be about questionable financial situation of Force India and unpaid bills...

All the top teams have had chances to sign him, and they have all passed on him. They are obviously not as impressed with him as some on this forum, so one year deals are really not working for him.

Well he looks the grumpiest of the three, but with Di Resta, I doubt that means anything.

Poor Paul? Both of them? I would see Perez next to Hulk.

Unfortunatelly I could not make the decision, how good is Paul Di Resta.

Was it a big hype by British media, or combination of bad luck and missed opportunities for an exceptional driver.

They said multi-year deal.

But they never said anything about the multiple option clauses.

The period where he had 4 straight dnfs has really put him on the line. His qualyfing didn't help aswell but i would put that down to there car/tyre changes.

A few months ago everyone thought Hulk was going to Lotus, after the quantum deal pretty much fell through that changed everything.

To be fair Sutil should be dropped, but he has money doesnt he?

He has not done too much, and if it were not for Di Resta's slump mid year this surely would be no contest.

Hulk is going the only place he could surely.

And with a Merc engine?  He should be fine to replace a Merc or Mclaren driver in 2015, I am betting Button!
