Frank Wrathall won't be on the grid, he's been jailed

I don't think you should have a racing license for the same period you've had your driving privileges revoked.

Do you make a disctintion between those expressly banned for offences like this one and those who lose it through totting up points for speeding?

If we were consistent, particularly within the realm of the FIA Road Safety Whatever, you would. But maybe you'd let accumulated points slide and only revoke the license for specific incidents like this one.

I agree with Ross, for any offence. A license to race fast machinery is a privilege for those who are adequately sensible enough with slower machinery on public roads. IMO

i.e. race car driving is not for dickheads, and should be seen so.

Totally agree. I used to think Frank was a sensible person, I was sadly mistaken. Condolences to the fingleton family.

Indeed. It is a shame about Frank, in that he is / was a good privateer racer, but clearly, if the press reportage is to be believed, is not actually of that good character outside the track. His case was brought up in last year's thread. Disappointed I was then, out rightly so now.

If Mat Jackson, Onslow-Cole and Turks can be confirmed as returning, then you'd have to say the grid has taken a huge step in the right direction quality-wise. Menu, Giovandardi, Marc Hynes, and Glynn Geddie are all entries that are genuinely interesting that, cars allowing, should be at the pointy end.

So Tom Ingram in at Speedworks. A genuinely interesting addition to the grid. He's probably got the talent to be regular winner but Speedworks will need to up their game if he is to do that this year.

I reckon it's going to be a crowded top ten this year.

I'm sure the people who make crash compilations will be devastated to lose Neate, Wrathall and Jeff Smith off the grid for 2014.

Guess that just means Matt Jackson and T-OC to confirm or otherwise (of the non-part time racers)?

Spotted Andrew Jordan pounding around Donington on Thursday and Matt Neal in the paddock in his race suit, although strangely didn't see sight of his car anywhere. I've never seen Matt in person before, out of the car that is, I had no idea how unbelievably tall he is.

Speaking of testing, there's a group test at Thruxton on Tuesday for anyone who's free and in the area.

New Focus in testing.

Also, "Motorbase has yet to confirm its other two drivers for 2014, though AUTOSPORT understands one of the strong possibilities has not previously raced in the BTCC."

WIX Racing (now sponsoring Adam Morgan's Ciceley Racing team) has revealed the livery that the lone Mercedes will be carrying this year.  Unsurprisingly, it bears more than a passing resemblance to Rob Austin's car last year.

Leaving one Speedworks seat, along with the #2 Rob Austin Audi and two Motorbase Fords up for grabs.

Jake Hill strongly rumoured for RAR if he can get the budget, while a "former open-wheel racer" is tipped for one of the Motorbase seats, leaving TOC and Mat Jackson to fight over the third (TOC would be my bet). Lea Wood was expected in the second Speedworks car so not sure who we will see there, possibly the Motorbase refugee?

This means, no BTCC Volvo, no Team ES Racing and no Renault Megans on the grid for 2014 - although given the strict licence terms TOCA have brought in, will all the teams necessarily be running at Brands GP who open at Brands Indy on March 30th?

Im kind of surprised Mat Jackson isn't signed anywhere. Sure TOC brings some money, but is is that much more? What's the point of all that Airwaves sponsorship if it's not going to pay for good drivers. Giovanardi can't be swallowing the entire budget.

I didn't realise you followed the BTCC Ross.

I was about to mention the Jackson thing as well. Surely he's fast enough for someone to pick him up?

Mat is is one of those guys who seems perpetually on the verge of a "breakthrough" year but it never quite seems to come off. Wonder if it's circumstances or just not quite enough talent now?

Matt Jackson provided some of the best car control I ever saw in the Clio Championship.

I think he has the talent, but eats too many pies.

I'm told that Airwaves were very disappointed with the performance of both Jackson and Smith last season, and their inability to develop any performance out of the car.

Remember in the mid-season test at Snetterton the team brought in Nick Tandy to help them with set-up: He drove both cars and was faster than Smith and Jackson.

So perhaps Airwaves asked for a driver capable of winning the championship?

I'm also told that Motorbase wants drivers to bring around £400k to be in the third car. I'd guess that's way more than Jackson was bringing in the past.

So it's a two car team with a third car ride buy? If you had 400k you could go anywhere.

And those rumours were correct!  That's a striking livery as well.  So will Tom Onslow-Cole or Mat Jackson get the final Motorbase seat?

Im guessing/hoping since that's a completely different livery, that's the 3rd/'ride buy' car.

Its probably a gurantee now, IME expecting the announcement this week, unless they've got a surprise up thier sleeve, it sounded like on TOC,s statement that he had a solid offer from Motorbase, so Jackson's lucky to be on the grid.

It's a shame that Jake Hill hasn't got the drive after his impressive showing last season, but Abbott is an experienced and highly competent GT driver, although he's probably best known for a huge crash he had a Oulton Park a few years ago in a Ginetta.

So, if Alain Menu's surprising comeback wasn't off-the-wall enough for you, 1990 champion Robb Gravett is considering a return to the series as well!  (Yes, as a driver!)

If I hadn't spent a couple of weeks of inactivity watching all the pre-Supertouring BTCC videos on Youtube, I wouldn't even have heard of him!

Who next? Win Percy?

So was that Motorbase who have offered him the drive?

Could it be that Jackson is out of the picture or is he bidding lower than 400k and they are waiting to see if anything higher appears?
