Rest in peace, Mr. 500.

I hope your legacy of innovation will arise again in IndyCar.

Whoah.. I knew I was high last night, I didn't realize I was "I've never listened to the Rolling Stones in my life, let's see what all the fuss is about" high. My apologies!

It might be.

So what do we make of the Andretti liveries for next year?

The Snapple car is really meh. Hinchcliffe's is great. They really managed to get the car shape and sponsors to work with each other.

I put my thoughts in the other thread.

I'm trying to remember what car the No.25 reminds me of. It looks a bit "busy" though, but at least it has sponsor logos. I like it but I have no idea what Snapple is.

Hinchcliffe can probably lose some of the Danica's Car stigma (Not that he carried much. He did a fair job of making it his own.) but I don't like the livery at all.  Looks like it escaped from Superleague Formula, complete with football club emblem.

I like RHR's DHL livery is nice and simple, even though I think little of that particularly useless courier company.

Munoz's is a bit plain looking.

What I don't like about all of them is the silver nosecone, which always looks to me like they're running a spare part that they didn't have time to paint properly. Ack!

Nobody dares go THERE anymore.

Oh hell ...for a minute there I though Marco was sponsored by Ipiranga.

EDIT: Oh and, you'll love this one Andrew, What's up with the Colombian sporting the "Good Drugs" logo?

Belle Farma indeed !!!

No the Indycar Silly Season 2014 thread. That's still acceptable AFAIK.

Hinch's car is probably as close as you can get to an old Player's/Greg Moore-style livery nowadays. With the red gloves hopefully.

I love Hinchcliffe's livery, except that I think they've got two different themes fighting against each other. I'd lose the dots-and-lines graphics.

I don't like the Snapple look as much as the RC liveries of the past couple years. I still like it though, but I can't decide whether the zig-zags are too NASCARish or too subtle.

I prefer the plain yellow of RHR's car over the yellow and white. I've never been a fan of yellow and white cars unless the third color is applied liberally as a divider (like the Canon Williams F1 cars).

I like the lines of Munoz's cars, although I really don't like the greens. But, considering that those are the sponsor's colors, it's not bad. I'd probably thicken the lighter green stripe on the "hip" of the car (the back of the sidepod) since it's the dominant green everywhere else. Right now it looks like they just felt like they had to fill the blank space with something.

Man, just got back from a test drive in a DeLorean. You wouldn't believe where I ended up.  Luckily some weirdo in a police call box saved me, though my age might be many times older than the age of the universe now.

That's from the same era as the Rusty Wallace time-travel ads. Racing commercials were just a lot better in the late 90s.

Check out this piece of art from the early 90s

I'd love to have been part of that pitch. "We're going to need a lot of money for paint"

Since there's been official requests for an officially official thread for the officially ex-Izod-sponsored Indycar Series' official 2014 season, I am officially declaring this official discussion in the official 2014 thread officially open. Officially official.

Yes, it's an officially uber-short opening post, so sue me, I'm officially at work and don't have enough time to officially put together an officially massive OP.  :rotfl: And that's used up my quota of "official(ly)" for the day... And now over to y'all to officially make this the biggest and best official season thread in the official history of this official forum.

Completely forgot to return to start this thread. I have failed.

Recently returned to the parents home to help clear the house and I found Indycar Racing for PC.  Three floppy disks!!!  Must've taken a fortnight to install in the old days. Modems and floppy disks, how did people have the patience in the 80s/90s?

I saw Doom on display in an electronics store in the spring of..hmm..94? Went home, fired up the modem, and checked out the shareware. Quick calculation later we sent away to have it mailed to us. Was faster than downloading.

THE POST OFFICE WAS FASTER THAN THE INTERNET.

Take that in, on the 25th anniversary of the internet.

True story, I managed to track down a working CD of Indycar Racing 2, The Cart version (yes, The Split went as far as to rename that game). You can find the thread somwhere in the sim forum. As weird as it may seem, the damn dx version still works in Windows 7 (just needs a more 90's resolution). Never thought I would drive around Nazareth with my gaming wheel, the game now feels complete.

Too many hours lost on that one. Odd fact, player movement actually behaves a lot like a speeding car, but it's more aparent when viewing it on the map.

I remember being a young lad in the 90s and it taking ages for a picture of a naked lady to fully load.

Haha, fully load.

I also remember this, my gateway to the drug that is motorsport:

... and that terrible Newman-Haas game.

Probably my fav sim ever. I logged sooooo many miles on that. Even before I started watching racing on TV.

Always ran the Penske, because it had the LCD dash.

Drove with this

600px-Ch_products_mach_1_joystick.jpg

And was still using it into the NASCAR and Indycar Racing 2 eras. That was the most reliable and unbreakable joystick I've ever used.

That's a little too old for me, although I definitely was around in the days of Windows 95 and floppy disks.

This was my first game. Great game, great intro.

I did a whole 24 hour race with no problems and then got 30 seconds into a battle of Tekken the next day and my PSX died.

Test Drive Le Mans was great but the only problem was the career mode was too easy. You had this pager thing (it was 1999 after all) that you would get messages after the race, something like "The boss says you need to drive faster!" if you finished last or whatever, but you'd also get offers from other teams if you did good. Except finishing 8th of 12 cars in the first race was somehow good. You could just trundle around in your Kremer Racing prototype and wait for all the big guys to DNF, come home 7th or 8th and then you'd get a message, "Audi Sport Team Joest wants you to drive for them!".

Time for a bit of a revival: http://www.autosport...t.php/id/113460 - new tweaks to the new Indy 500 qualifying weekend format announced. Why do they keep messing with it? Leave it at something already and be done with it.

Of course there are always Bible-thumpers trying to save us as we enter the Speedway but the Westboro Baptist variety are a whole different story.

I'll note this interesting bit,

Their targets are Jim Nabors and cold beer.

There might be an ass-kicking.

Not trying to get in trouble with the administrators here (again), but I'll openly admit that I might punch one of them if I see them. No opinion on Nabors. Let the man live his life. Who gives a flying canoodle. But my beer. You try telling me I am going to hell for wanting my beer chilled and we will have a problem. Not a religious man, but anyone threatening my beer will see my wrath.

On the Montagny front. Good for him! If Champ Car had lasted at least one more season in '08, he probably would have taken the title. I remember the Forsythe cars being on their game in testing. His career took a serious hit due to that. But glad to see him back in the states. Some of his best success has been in an Andretti fielded race car.

Well, let's segue in some Tom Lehrer, while we're waiting ...

Won'tcha come with me to Alabammy,
Back to the arms of my dear ol' Mammy,
Her cookin's lousy and her hands are clammy,
But what the hell, it's home.

Yes, for paradise the Southland is my nominee.
