Started in 1954.

The Montreal Gazette, Oct 8, 1964, Page 32:
Dave Greenblatt beat Dave
Greenblatt by almost two sec-
onds in the annual Mont Gab-
riel Hillclimb sponsored by the
Jaguar Owners Association. The
Montreal car designer-builder-
driver was timed in 63.54 sec-
onds driving his Corvette
Special and was also second
fastest of the day at 65.29 driv-
ing a Corvette Sting Ray.
Tom Moore was third overall
and fastest Jag with 65.36 in an
E-type followed by C. Huot,
Sting Ray, 65.59 and George
Brocklehurst, who was also fast-
est sedan with 66.56 in the 1300
c.c. Mini Cooper. Ernie DeVos
placed sixth overall in yet an-
other Sting Ray at 67.03.
Some 1,100 paid to watch the
event, marred by a brief cloud-
burst, and J.M. Bowles was the
only casualty when he flipped
his XKE into the bushes. The
course record is 59.69 set last
year by Norm Namerow in the
Lotus Ford 19B.

Thanks Rupert! Does anyone have any idea who the guy in the Lotus 18 Formula Junior with the 'Rob Walker-like' white nose-band would be?

Lotus 18 names racing in Canada around then include Walt McKay, Peter Lerch and Ned Mathias, apparently (Source: F2Register).

Car #96 is Jerry Daniel Irion, of Montreal, Lotus 18. He was entered in the FJ race at the Canadian Grand Prix, 22 September 1962, with that number, which has a look of permanence.
Another Montreal car was Peter G. Keith, Cambridge Motors (1962) Ltd., Westmount, Quebec, Lotus 18.
By the way it is Walter Mackay.

Thanks Rupert, much appreciated, and for the correction on Walt M's spelling!

The Montreal Gazette, Sep 28, 1962
MONT GABRIEL - Once
more the Jaguar Owners' As-
sociation will hold its popu-
lar annual hill climb here this
weekend.
Long a favourite of many
motor sport enthusiasts, the
Mont Gabriel Hill Climb on
the access road of the Mont
Gabriel Lodge will be held on
Sunday afternoon with many
of the competitors getting in
their practice times early
Sunday morning.
This year, however, the
club has made a number of
interesting modifications to
the already exciting course.
A chicane has been added at
a point one-third of the
way up the twisting, steeply-
inclined paved course.
This refinement not only an
additional series of tricky
corners for the drivers but an
excellent vantage point for
spectators.
The organizers have pro-
vided for the usual classes
for racing including sedans
and sports car of various
capacities and a class for
domestic sedans which, it is
expected, will add spice to
the competition.
The current record is held
by Stan McRobert who climb-
ed the hill in 39.2 seconds in
1957 driving an XK-SS Jaguar.
Since then he has tried again
in various cars which last
year included his potent
Ford-powered Formula Junior,
but has failed to match his
1957 time.
Norm Namerow also ran last
year in a very fast Junior and
came within a few seconds of
the record to win his class as
did Dave Greenblatt in his
Chev-powered Sadler Mark IV.
Among this year's entries are
a number of the new E-type
Jaguars as well as Ted Iler's
super-tuned XK-SS. McRobert
will be back again in his
Junior and this year, for the
first time, a number of wo-
men drivers have entered in
various machines from a Volvo
to an XK-E.
Since the new course has
been lengthened, the old record
will probably stand for many
years to come, so the challenge
this Sunday will be to set the
fastest time which will prob-
ably be in the area of a min-
ute.
With the new course, inter-
esting new cars will be racing
against the clock to set a new
record and improved spectator
facilities, this year's event is
shaping up to be one of the
most exciting in the history of
the run.
END

I think Stan McRobert drove the Whitton FJ; Namerow an Elva 200-B.M.C.

Dates:

1959 Oct 3-4

1960 Oct 1-2, JOA Hill Climb Mont Gabriel
Oct 15-16 LAC Hill Climb [Was this at Mont Gabriel also?]

The Chequered Past: Sports Car Racing and Rallying in Canada, 1951-1991
By David Anderson Charters

1954: "That same year in Quebec the Laurentian Autosport Club held the first hill
climb up the steep road to the ski lodge at the top of Mont Gabriel,
north of Montreal. In 1958 the Jaguar Owners Association took it over
and it became a regular fixture on the Quebec region schedule. [Page 54.]

1970: "In Quebec the ACAM
club had taken over the  Mont Gabriel hill climb from the JOA and their 1970 event, sponsored by Pennzoil, drew forty-six competitors." [Page 207.]

It would be a long way from home in Quebec in 1962?

Full windscreen might be a clue? International regulations?

Thanks to Mike Tanney et al at CMSHG we now know the mystery car is the Triumph Special of Gerry Cockerill, from Ottawa.

http://www.autocours...mb/Pages/7.html

Car ran as #140 in the Canadian G.P. at Mosport, 30 September 1961.
Retired lap 25.

Car ran as #41 in the Watkins Glen Grand Prix, 22 September 1962.

Ottawa Citizen, Sep 24, 1962, Page 26
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP)-
Walt Hansgen of Westfield,
N.J., won the 15th running of
the Watkins Glen Grand Prix
sports car race Saturday by a
wide margin. He was driving a
Cooper.
The race was marred by the
death of veteran driver A.M.
(Budd) Faust of Wilkes Barre,
Pa., who was killed when his
Lotus Buick ran off course and
hit two trees midway through
the race.
Gerry Cockerill of Ottawa
driving his Triumph engined
HMV Special placed second in
the E modified class. Gerry
who averaged 80 miles per hour
in the 44-lap event was beaten
out by a Maserati.

First in Class E was the #9 Maserati 200SI of Conrad Kraus.
The #11 Lotus-Buick of Bud Faust was a Mark IX known as the Lotus Skylark.

Cockerill won the First Gatineau Hill Climb in the Triumph Special in 1962, date uncertain.
The car is Italianate in appearance being similar to the contemporary O.S.C.A. at the front, with a touch of Maserati.
