Worthy of a thread me thinks!

Very well produced little video. Not sure what's causing the whistling noise. Mounted cameras perhaps?

That's no turbo... It's wind noise or something like that.

I guess they didn't beat the Porsche.

Not that noise. There is another noise, most noticeable on the straight at the end.

Are you joking? So that means that the record is now 6min.47s.

Ferrari needs to up their game with the la Ferrari.

Of course 6:11 takes some doing even in 30 year old machinery, on a track full of cars for good measure... Although Laudas lap could well have been the quickest for the applicable sections that were in use.

Does every video need to be a work of art? I'm sure it's a nice bit of marketing, but all the video needs to be is the onboard lap itself.

I love the video, but I do want them to release the full on board too.

McLaren haven't released the time, reason is officially unknown but according a conversation between a McLaren owner and salesman the car did a 6.47 on road tyres and a 6.33 on slicks adding the reason the time hasn't been released officially is because they are waiting on what Ferrari may or may not achieve with the La Ferrari.

From what journalists seemed to say in common whilst watching the P1 lap the Nordschleife was that they had never seen a road car take corners anywhere near what the P1 could....

Does Ferrari take its cars to the ring for development? I always thought it was either Fiorano or Mugello.

Because F1 race tracks these days look like parking lots without anything near the track to give a sense of the car's speed and TV broadcasters are utterly incompetent - to say the very least - in using propper cameras and angles. :'(

There are rumors that McLaren havnt released the time yet because they have problems generating enough electricity from regenerative braking for the car to run a whole lap at 100%...The charge from battery isn't enough for the car to run a complete hot lap like the porsche.

Their 6.47 unofficial time is a couple of laps with the best sector time of each taken.

That would explain why they havent released a a full lap onboard video yet.

Not true. The P1 was developed to do an entire lap at the Nurburgring with enough charge in it. It was clocked doing over 200 mph in the final straight, Dottinger Hohe, at the end of the lap which suggests it has more than enough poke left in it.

Straight cut gears? Nah. Maybe the electric engine.

Mclaren lied. They had high hopes and were super confident of beating Porsche's time. But when they didn't beat the time, they simply said they did beat the time, and decide not to release the time.

Did they say they beat Porsche? AFAIK they only confirmed beating the 7 minutes, but from what I've read they were slightly slower than Porsche with an average speed of "over 178 km/h" vs Porsche's official 179.5 km/h. And that's surely the reason why they don't come up with a time. They will probably have another go in the summer before announcing anything.

exploiting the myth "green hell" with what? No timed lap, no evidence at all. Keep on spinning (carbonfibre) yarn!

the high pitch noise is the electric motor or something related to it ( a horrible noise btw)

Because they promised it (the sub-7 minute) earlier this year at the motor shows and were obliged to deliver what they promised to the customers?

Of course it was part of their original marketing strategy, however the post I orignally replied to stated:

"This has to be one of the biggest marketing flops of the last decade"

The fact that the original marketing ploy lead to all the P1 cars being sold out tells us that the marketing was a huge success not a "flop". Basically the "marketing" for the P1 is over. The marketing for the P13 will be based on other cars in the same category as itself.

I doubt cars are selected on by prospective customers on their ultimate time around the ring under "special circumstances".

The question is, is it worth getting involved an unofficial uncontrolled "pissing contest" with other manufacturers? All the P1's are sold, so they cannot change the specification of the P1. The other manufactures from what I can see are able to produce "variants" of their production cars (eg. "Weissach package") which move them more towards a pure racing machine.

There may be some "pride" involved, however pride isn't necessarily compatible with a business plan.

First I don't agree that it has been "one of the biggest marketing flops" but it still comes across like a small one to me. Maybe not so much for the P1 (although I'm sure its customers would love to drive the fastest road legal car, however one may subjectively define that) but for the McLaren brand.

Doing a time under 7 minutes in a road legal car is hugely impressive and if they wouldn't care about "pride" they would simply say their time, wouldn't they? "Pride" is probably the most important thing for supercar-customers, and as such it's very important for the company too, obviously.

As it is, it looks like they entered the pissing contest as you say but ducked out after finding out that they weren't quite pissing as far as Porsche was.

But of course we cannot say for sure since we just don't know the time.

All P1 sold out ? From where is that coming from ? And you forget the most important thing here, their Super Car brand reputation, if the P1 is so awaited, it's not only because of their marketing campaign, but firstly because they are the ones behind the F1.
