Not good news if that means they're preparing for one or two teams to go bust....

They'll struggle, Formula E is attracting more interest with its equally **** rules... I imagine some billionaire will suggest some interest but nothing worthwhile. WSC better option for the big boys...

Taking a positive view, this might be the FIA preparing the ground for a favoured new team to enter F1 (maybe the longed for VW/Audi entry for instance).

Or, taking a negative view, it is the FIA re-arranging the deckchairs on the 'Titanic'

Good luck to them. The last time the FIA proposed a cost cap and invited bids for new teams, the goalposts moved from a regulated €40m cap to unlimited budgets after the successful bidders had committed, which is one major reason why one of the bidders never made the grid, another probably shouldn‘t have bothered with hindsight and the other two are still pointlessly propping up the grid 4 years later.

Anybody who bids for this had better do so on the assumption that spending will be effectively unregulated from 2015.

Considering that there are currently two spare grid slots, will the FIA fill them both if there are two suitable candidates? At least they are giving a lot more notice this time, rather than the half-year before the first test the last lot got.

If there are actually capable parties able to sustain a F1 programme of course. Anyone could of asked to join for the past few years with or without an invitation, and there is enough of a struggle to finance the existing teams, let alone set a new one up.

I think they are again too late. New teams entering 1 or more years into new regulations, basically gives them no chance at all. They'll be behind from the start and never able to catch up enough. Same as with the teams that entered in 2010.

It also means that they'll be entering straight into the new budget cap rules, which obviously make F1 a more competitive entry point.

The same lie Caterham (at the time Team Lotus), Marussia (at the time Virgin), HRT (at the time Hispania) and USGP bought into.

Mario Andretti talks about Michael being interested if they bring back customer cars on ESPNF1. With the new cap rules it's a possiblity. Andretti/Ferrari?

Maybe - if Ferrari want to field 3 cars, why not 4? But then STR might need to be allowed to use RBR design as well, and less TV income.

It was a clever con, though, as it maintained a high number of cars when Toyota called it quits and BMW left Sauber almost taking the team with them.

The MasterCard Lola's are on eBay at the moment, might snap them up for 99p and go racing! (Only 12 seconds off the pace)

With heavy restrictions on spending, they might even have less chance of really competing, since all the other teams have a year of unlimited spending development behind them.

As if they wouldn't have made room for Toyota, BMW, Ford or VW if they made enquiries

Good news if it is a new team (and all existing continue). Let's hope we get a couple of decent bids.

I see it states from '15 or '16 but then mentions "until '20 inclusive". Is that just the length of the new Concorde Agreement or are they saying that they will still accept applicants after the '16 season?

It would be great to get more teams, hopefully with a budget cap this attracts a new entry, albeit I'm well aware this is what was promised back then when the last bunch entered and any new entrants will be wary that the same could happen again.

I don't understand the logic behind someone bidding for a new entry slot ... both Lotus and Sauber are for sale, they have infrastructure and personnel in place, I am sure it would be cheaper to work out a deal for the debt than to go building up from scratch.

Looking at the new teams that have entered F1 lately I fail to see how this is a good idea.

But it's nice to hear that FIa is opening something that is already open.

In other news - IKEA just announced their stores are open for anyone wanting ti apply to go in there and shop.

I really hope this happens and stops all the suggestions of teams running 3 cars etc.

This can only mean that they are certain at least one team is going to go Tango Uniform soon.

I wonder which team is the most likely to roll over and die.

That's what I was thinking, too. Plenty of people thinking this is to cover the FIA's back in the case a team (or a few teams) folds, but it could just as likely be to make it harder for 3rd cars to come in and the top teams to monopolize the sport.

I can't really think of a brand that wants to establish its own F1 team now though. 2014 would have been a great season to enter F1, but 2015 or 2016, is perhaps less suited.

2015 introduces the budget cap. Plus the powertrains will have had a season of working out all the gremlins. But I still think it will be cheaper to buy an existing team than it would be to start from scratch. The only rational reason I can see is if the rumors around Austin were true, ie that there was interest in a redux of a US based F1 team (hopefully without Windsor and co)

Formula E has just made F1 look very unattractive to any new teams especially with regard to finding sponsorship and investment

I don't know - depends on how the first race goes. I could see both these Formula's merge within 10 years though.

There were rumours about a new US team, but I heard they want to buy Lotus or Sauber, not founding a new team.

I think there will be no team who will be selected. ART perhaps when the budget cap will really happen but I think there will be no new team in 2015, unfortunately

Interesting idea, but as I think someone said on Sky's F1 journalists show, if he does he should be smart enough not to use his own money!

500 million F1 fans globally. 500 million required to run an F1 team with actual potential. Coincidence ? I think not.
