Yup and this is becoming a pre-season tradition for Lewis, crashing on the first day of running. That's how you break a car in, I was almost relieved when I first heard the news.
Lol. He does love his fence on day 1.

Positive though. The car looks good straight out of the box - and they hit the ground well and truly running......... Unlike some others.
Also hit the wall well and truly running.
I kid, I kid! Not an ideal first day's running but it could have been worse.

Lol. Well it had to happen didn't it? But at least they now know a weakspot which appears to be a little bit of structural fiddling rather than a fundamental issue with the concept of the car. I mean....... they haven't bolted on a 2008 wing and proclaimed that everything is fine
Ahhhhhh....... The good old days........

Bit odd they didn't have a spare fw don't you think?
Posted 28 January 2014 - 14:02
Any word on Lewis' new steering wheel yet? Or is it still the same old one?
I remember him saying that he wanted his wheel to not be connected on the bottom of the handgrips (like mclaren) I also heard his seating position wasn't correct. the main one for me though is how he's dealing with the brakes on the W05.

Maybe they had a spare one but it has the same design flaw.

Not when you consider the tight time schedule they´ve been on. Whats odd is that the FW came off on a straight

http://live.autospor...tary.php/id/69113:59 Despite his earlier crash, Hamilton is upbeat about his first day in the W05:
"For me it's an incredibly positive start to be the first car out on track and completing a good number of laps.
"Of course, it's unfortunate to end the day early when everyone has worked so hard and we had looked like easily completing the most mileage of anyone here today."
JONATHAN NOBLE is speaking with the Briton, who still heads the day one timesheets, as we type. Look out for more reaction later.

Haha, yes I know but I was refering to the "odd" part is that it should withstand that load.

Lewis sounds very happy. That's always a good sign.

Hmm. I am no engineer, but that is puzzling that it didn't break at a point without a seeming weakness.

Best looking car, no contest. Hopefully this front wing issue is not terminal (in terms of design)
Posted 28 January 2014 - 14:37

Looks like it failed where it had been laminated onto the nose rather than the mounting point. Maybe a bad batch of resin.

And here afilm from the crash, pretty big one to start the season with!

From the image of the wing being transported back in the car, it looks like it may have been a failure of the clever vanity panel usage in the nose? If I'm keeping up correctly, the general opinion is that Mercedes are using a twin tusk setup like the Lotus but covering it with some clever use of the vanity panel in the front wing pillars. The image seems to show the failure wasn't in the mountings between the wing and pillars - it was between the pillars and car. Could that be to do with the vanity panel at all?
Armchair mechanic here.

The STR sounds like a wookie being tortured. Uhaaaahhhhrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrr rrrrr rrrrr.
So impressive, the Marussia guys having a conversation trackside seem not too aware there is a car nearby until it's in front of them.
The most interesting sound - what was that boom that accompanied the failure on Lewis' car?
Posted 28 January 2014 - 15:34
If you'd have told me this morning the car would complete 18 laps today I'd have expected a disaster. The fact it looks good and has done more laps than most whilst doing a little 'troubleshooting' in the process makes for a day in which they accomplished more than expected rivals means I can't believe I'm this happy with the day.

Where the wing meets the mounts seems to be completely bare, it's not surprising - that is a teeny tiny little point.
It has to have a hollow section to allow for telemetry wires in addition to that - I would be surprised if it's just bonded to the wing, but it kind of looks that way, nothing looks "torn out". Too optimistic design.
On the other hand, one wonders what they expected to accomplish with the mounts attached so far back on the trailing edge of the wing. Seems like the wing might want to flex a little...

That's really nothing new, if you look at previous years and other teams.

Maximises wing area for one.

Concur, sounds just like a military APU. Until it quits, then it becomes a vacuum cleaner being turned off. And it doesn't sound like that on track, it sounds like a wookie in pain.
Interesting sequence, though. The manner in which the IC engine slows down after being put in gear is peculiar, and since the whine is out of sync - hmmm. The turbo assist motor stays spooled up?
These cars sound more interesting when they're going slow.
Posted 28 January 2014 - 15:54
Best design by far. I hope they kick as with this car, to prove all of the rest that a ridiculous looking stick coming out of the nose was not the only way to go about this.
Posted 28 January 2014 - 15:58

It looks a little more drastic IMO in that it has a thinner cross section, it appears to be similar but is farther back. Maybe not.

Just turbulence. It fell off as soon as he pulled out of Lewis' slipstream.

Turbulence cannot cause a functioning front wing to fail, at least not at the speeds the cars can achieve.

I don't think so. That's Hamilton pulling out of the garage, not on track, so seems unlikely that it'd be off the ground.

I see where you're going. Despite that it's already a beautiful car and I like that picture, I think it would help.
