Overseas?....

Auntie still focused on Empire I see.

It's technically a correct statement. If you're not from GB you are from overseas. We were an island last time I checked.

I think the Lions were more deserving having smashed the colonials on their manor, so to speak. First time in 16 years. And it's a part-time team with all that entails, so quite an achievement.

Exactly. A bit like the Ashes '05. Well & truly deserved winners.

Surprised Rafa didn't win it though - Wimbledon's early exit probably cost him the title.

If all one read was this forum one would be led to believe that Vettel is reviled.

This place is such a bubble. Have to remember that.

I know! Unlike the USA that isn't an Island yet manages acts more like one than us and then has the audacity to call a national sporting competition The World Series. SPOTY is a British Broadcasting Corporation production with a rather predictable British focus. It also has a prize for non-British sports people that they refer to, quite logically and rationally, as 'overseas'. Because everyone who has ever won it is. Would you rather they renamed it to overair to reflect the modern penchant for air travel over sea travel?

For once I would have prefered a non-F1 driver to win it as a Rafa fan. Incredible year , more impressive than Seb's imo.

I totally agree. Unless Rafa has the fastest tennis racket in his sport like Sebs package in F1 lol. No seriously though I do think Rafa had a more impressive year IMO. Well done to Seb though, it seems he deserved it with the number of votes. :)

No Tenman, I'd rather they look further than their own broadcast schedules, but that's just me.

I understand your disenchantment with American sporting tunnel vision.

However the tides there are shifting and there's a bit more leeway these days for non US sporting endeavours.

We get all the 3pm EPL league matches live, Rugby,Cricket,Skiing,Track and Field, All the Car Racing in addition to all the Americentric sports.

To refute of this show's legitimacy..

May I offer you a picture of your most suitable British sporting personality along side a Brazilian and a surly tennis player.

So the German equivalent is the re-imposition of the master race?

Great Britain refers to a geographical collection of islands. NI is on an island.

It's very islandy.

I can confirm that NI is on an island separate from the rest of UK. There used to be a special causeway joining it with the Scotland but one big guy has destroyed it and you can only see it's ends now.

Pity because it must have looked pretty good impressive ...

Much as I agree Dario doesn't get the recognition he deserves, he hasn't won anything in 2014 so it would have been a bit of a perverse choice.

And it is a public vote, so who are we to argue!

Yeah, true pacific...

But not even a mention, after a career like that, devalues the production's credibility.

Public ignorance notwithstanding.

No, actually I am a huge fan of Rafa - and I agree he was spectacular.  I just give Seb the edge.

Well, by your posts on these forums , you prefer Seb.

I have said it again and I will say it to eternity: Sports Personality of the Year... an oxymoron if there ever was one.

It would be better if this price would be given every ten years or so, if a real personality amongst sportspeople has risen to the occasion.

Please explain to me how one can get from the UK to the non-UK without going over (or under) a sea? (Rep. Of Ireland not included!).

Was pleasantly surprised to see an F1 driver win the award, especially given Lauda is the only previous recipient. Rather beggars belief that despite all of their achievements, no such award was ever bestowed upon the likes of Prost, Senna and Schumacher.

The whole thing's a bit crap though, to be honest. Take team of the year for instance - the British & Irish Lions rugby union team won despite only actually having played three proper matches, one of which they lost. Neither Red Bull Racing nor Wigan Warriors rugby league (league and cup double winners) were nominated.

Some of you are taking this way too seriously. You also don't seem to understand how BBC politics works either. It all has to be 'inclusive' and other such PC bollox.

Murray was obviously going to win the popular vote by several country miles. Therefore the overseas personality was never going to be another tennis player. So, given that they couldn't choose Nadal, Vettel was the next best option, given that there haven't really been many outstanding individual performances in any sport this year.

That then knocks out any chance for Red Bull in the team competition, since they weren't going to give another prize to motor racing. You could probably make a case for Team Sky in cycling too - but that was never going to happen either, for obvious reasons. The England cricket team were probably well in the frame until last month - not now though  So who else is there? The Lions and  ... er ... um ...

`What IS a Caucus-race?' said Alice; not that she wanted much to know, but the Dodo had paused as if it thought that SOMEBODY ought to speak, and no one else seemed inclined to say anything.

`Why,' said the Dodo, `the best way to explain it is to do it.' (And, as you might like to try the thing yourself, some winter day, I will tell you how the Dodo managed it.)

First it marked out a race-course, in a sort of circle, (`the exact shape doesn't matter,' it said,) and then all the party were placed along the course, here and there. There was no `One, two, three, and away,' but they began running when they liked, and left off when they liked, so that it was not easy to know when the race was over. However, when they had been running half an hour or so, and were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out `The race is over!' and they all crowded round it, panting, and asking, `But who has won?'

This question the Dodo could not answer without a great deal of thought, and it sat for a long time with one finger pressed upon its forehead (the position in which you usually see Shakespeare, in the pictures of him), while the rest waited in silence. At last the Dodo said, `EVERYBODY has won, and all must have prizes.'

Alice in Wonderland, Chapter 3.

I think that Seb deserved the award as he has had a fantastic year and maybe the BBC thought of it as an accumulation for the past four years. What annoyed me about the programme was its usual ignorance of other great motorsport achievers - no mention of Allan McNish - World Endurance Champion, no mention of Dario Franchitti's achievements or retirement. It seems that unless its F1 or a driver has been killed (sadly) motorsport is not considered a worthy sport for the BBC.

  • and also even worse and disresctfull in the sports people we have lost they missed out alan simonson but had maria de volita.
  • the bbc seem to think f1 is the top of all motorsport but actualy its just the pinnacle of open wheel racing(i dont know why no other catorgories get a mention in the uk)
  • for the overseas champion as much as vettel deserved it what about marc marquez in motogp(rookie champion )was more impressive.
  • yet another bash at bbc when they showed a 2 second clip of moto gp it said "pictures from brittish eurosport" (how embarrising is that considering the bbc also covered the 2013 season)

i think the bbc or sky should create a motorsport personalty of the year so that all types of racing get mentioned or they could show the autosport or fia awards on bbc and sky

I cant see why anyone isnt surprised by this and doesnt know it already!

Actually Great Britain is geographically an island which consists of the bulk of England Wales and Scotland. Isle of Wight, Scilly Isles, Angelsey and all the Scottish Islands are technically not part of Great Britain. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the country.

Tenman the border between Eire and the UK isn't sea.. You could also argue Gib and Spain and the bases and Cyprus but technically The BOT's aren't part of the Uk neither is the Isle of Man and the Channel isles..

But if Webber,WHO DID THE EXACT SAME THING,was nominated he would be given the trophy because he is a nice rugged aussie bloke who stuck it to the German antichrist right?

In my opinion, he didn't do the exact same thing because he failed to pass sebastian. To me it seemed like he was making a point in Silverstone 2012 rather than ignoring team orders.

But he said it himself that he was trying to pass Seb because if Fernando dropped of due to reliabilty,he would be winning the race. The fact that he didnt pass Seb is irrelevant because he clearly intended to,only he couldnt pull it off.

Dont get me wrong,Mark was right to pass Seb if he felt he was faster, just like Seb was faster than Mark in that last stint.(More fuel, faster tyre),Seb pulled it of,Mark played the 'poor Aussie' card and the rest is history.

Made a new thread for Sebastian Vettel's nomination for the Laureus Award. I'm leaving yet another Multi 21 argument here though. Please take the hint!
