Yesterday I rewatched 2009 Australian GP. And a lot of times when they go onboard with someone from nearly every team, there´s a weird sound on the high revs of high gears (sometimes 5th, sometimes 6th, sometimes 7th).

I inmediately remembered having spotted exactly the same back then watching it live, wondered what that would be, if it could have something to do with new regs. But the noise went away from the cars as season went forward.

It sounds like the driver doing a downshift to then inmediately upshift again, all of it in the middle of the straights, close before braking zones actually. Sounds like some sort of extremelly clumsy gearbox operation by drivers in weird zones, but HUD shows full throttle and of course no gearshifting as you´d expect while the weird changing revs sound happens..

I leave here a link to video where it´s easy to spot it.

Anyone knows what this is about?

Just a glitch in the video.

Just a glitch in the video.

If it´s just that, (and it´s probably the easiest explanation) it must be the same problem with a handful of cameras, which is weird. Also the sound was present in TV quality video.

Because I can´t find too many videos from that weekend on youtube, but I can tell you that sound was happening in a lot of cars, always on the same gears and rev range.

Edit: found new video, and sure, must be bad cameras that weekend. because I found out another video where camera just goes full ****** after doing the same sort of out-of-sync gearbox sound.

I picked up on this back at the time as well and wondered whether it was some sort of KERS interference with the signal. Martin Brundle mentioned in commentary at one point in the season that it was an audio glitch whick kind of laid it to rest.

As the car mounted transmitter passes metal constructions, like wire netting, triangulated pylons used for mounting cameras and other equipment there is a break in the continuity of reception. If you have a DAB car radio, or an FM radio and pass between buildings with skeletal steel frames, you get the same sort of effect - It can even happen with heavy rain on your Sky dish!
