No intention at all to be condescending- but if you want to write for  public consumption then it's a good idea to get the basics right. You may well write like an angel(and I genuinely wish you all the best with it ) but if you profess to be a writer then some evidence of being able to do so would be a good starting point when you are posting on a forum full of pedants like me

No man, my mistake.

I read it back and typed too fast without checking my spelling and grammar, did not see my mistakes until you brought it to my attention. Sorry I reacted in a hostile manner, I have edited my comments now if you want to see what I actually meant

Sennafan24. Your readership on TNF is totally different from the other lot on Racing Comments.Telegraph and Grudian readers rather than FCH or whatever its called.

In general I still have problems with the names people hide behind rather than that given when they were born.Whats the point ?

Fair play, I shall have to be a little less relaxed with my posts in this section then! Not sure what FCH is though?

I think some people are shy about sharing their identity with strangers on these type of boards. In this day and age there are a lot of strange people online, a quick google search of a simple name can reveal a lot (think about Twitter and Facebook). I am not bothered personally, as my real name is in my profile along with my email address, but I can understand why others are.

Just to be clear then, my TNF account was set up for me when I was at home in France, as for some reason, I couldn't join from there, and the chap that did it used my Ebay user name (as password!!), but I do put my proper name in the in the box at the bottom, the one I usually write under (though most of my stuff has been for others, clubs and TV companies), I've never deliberately hidden

I didn't take the post as hostile, we're all big boys!!

Always a good idea to think carefully and have a read-through before clicking on Post. I think it would be a good idea if one or two posts were deleted, which would then make a few others redundant.

A large chip on one's shoulder could lead to a bit of a 'list'.

Why not something you choose for yourself rather than something foisted on you?

Besides which, I need some plausible deniability for when IT at work notice that I tend to pop on here during office hours...

My sympathies lie with those of your clients who get billed for it...

You should know better than to say that, Richard, as you represent part of your outfit's on cost or overheads. In your line of work you should know that there is no victimless crime. Perhaps you condone theft of pens and paper etc, or chairs, or falsifying expenses. In my book it all comes under the same heading.
BTW some of us are aware of the reasons for your nom de forum, nature of your job etc.

On the question of forum names, this was the first internet forum I joinedand at the time it appeared that nearly everyone used an alias or nickname and I followed suit.  D-Type just seemed a good idea reflecting when I first became interested in the sport.  Later, after a similar discussion to this I considered asking the administrators if I could change my user name, but by then my "D-Type" ID was well-established and used on other forums.  So I compromised and put my name into my signature.

On the lists issue, the first question is whether a "list" feature is a valid journalistic device to provide a peg to hang an article on or whether it is just lazy journalism.  It really depends on the subject of the list.  Is it a sensible choice of list?  Do I agree with the selection?  Do I agree with the ranking?  Does producing a list automatically imply a ranking?  It probably does unless qualified by "In no particular order" or "in chronological order".  There is a world of difference between the normal internet forum "What is your list of [say] 'Your favourite corners' and 'Your favourite corners and why'.  . The "and why" is the journalist's justification.

As to standards of writing on forums.  We all make typos and we should proof read before we post - but we don't.  I am fairly relaxed about an enthusiast making a contribution expressing an opinion or giving us his reminiscences.  But I do still expect factual accuracy.  If someone claims to be a writer or journalist I expect a better standard: correct spelling, correct grammar, correct word usage, factual accuracy and clarity of meaning as a minimum.

Who's Richard?

Besides which, our internet policy allows personal internet use.   I suppose on the basis that if I can turn my mind to something else for a few minutes, I can recharge the brain to deal with the matter at hand.  Add to that the unpaid overtime I put in and it more than evens itself out.

It must work - by one measure, I am the most successful person in my field ever.  :p

A very narrow field perchance?   ;)

Who's Richard?

He's probably confusing you with Richard Armstrong - but why?

Totally agree with this approach - you're paid for what you know and do - not for the hours you put in.

   [Extremely] Narrow field?  Or did you write the measurement criteria? ;)

It's a narrow field of specialism, true enough. And there is not much in it that can reasonably be measured.  But on one measure I got the best result (so far).  Albeit I'm not sure how much credit I can take for that, the other side made it a piece of cake, they simply could not see the truth and danced on technical points so much they were pierced to the heart by them.

Whose for a list of things that were taken from the office then?

I am sure I mentioned it, but I have no problem with a "Top Ten" article, every so often, but week after week, and some of the subjects have been very weak. Bottom line is, if I don't like them, I don't read them, but if I am one of a few hundred, it sort of undermines the reason to have a commercial magazine, because sooner or later, you fail to exist.

Drawings of the Shadow DN9, Ferrari technical manual for 2007, MZ engine parts...

If you're anything like the solicitors I've dealt with in recent years, possibly Dick Turpin.

Whilst I have no desire to go OT further, I simply mis-remembered your name, as it is a long time since I was told it at a FoS when you arrived at the TNFers' meeting point. Wasn't that around the time you won some completion or other and your name became known via another TNFer, or have I got that wrong?

Hm, I don't think so, I can't think of any competitions I've won, other than C&SC Mystery Car a while back.

I've just been on the Motor Sport magazine website, and they're at it again. For the 90th anniversary edition in July they are compiling a list of readers' "favourite car" and "favourite driver"  for each of the decades. Each to their own, as they say. But I think "Why?" What's it for, apart from filling pages?

I agree that lists are tedious. But I must defend Motor Sport. I'm sure they are in a business (as so many are these days) where it is hard to turn a quid. So the answer to your question "Why" is most probably because it sells magazines and enables them to keep turning out what is a very good read every month.

Here in Australia, poker machines are allowed in pubs. They are just ghastly. But I don't enter their 'pokey rooms'; I simply enjoy what are in effect meals subsidised by those who choose to throw their money away in the pokies. A fairly appropriate analogy, if I may....

Michel Vaillant not in the list when he makes such wonderful boilers!

As for not including Edgar Jessop, it's probably because his camera shops went into receivership!

I would have included the relevant quotes but "the system" wouldn't let me despite two attempts!

Well to be honest I think Motorsports list offering is even lazier than Autusports, they can't even be bothered to write their own tedious list!

I'm going for a lie down....................
