The last-lap madness / carnage of China 2006 was pretty exciting, though shocking from Sato IIRC.

 

I remember watching a youtube video of it with an Australian commentator saying 'James Allen on ITV will be going crazy - he's Button's biggest fan!'

Thanks to Mr Roebuck I grew up believing that the 1964 world championship passed through the hands of Clark, then Hill, then Surtees during the course of the last lap of the final race. A recent look at a lap chart debunked that one.

 

  I always remember Roebuck fondly now, cause he was pretty active during a period when it all meant much more to me than today (even if at that time I saw him more as the antagonist to my all-time-favourite journo DSJ).

 

In any case I reckon Roebucks writing always has a larger portion of fiction / imagination in it than most other motoring journalist, that's probably why his pieces were also more entertaining than most others. Conversely they are less valuable than most others as historical reference source.

Well, although it was not strictly a "last lap battle", my favourite one is Suzuka 1994 when it rained and they used "aggregate scores" to determine the winner. Hill was leading from Schumacher but we did not know until they crossed the line who had actually won. I always remember Murray Walker screaming "three point four seconds!" which was just enough for Hill to win. It was great!

I'm surprised a couple of obvious one - Villeneuve and Arnoux and Senna and Mansell at Spain 86 were not mentioned. However that Indy Lights one was immense! Couldn't make it up.

Ah I was at that one, Kimi went off before the last lap, I think 2 before the end if I remember right. Poor Kimi if only he knew all he had to do was keep it steady behind Hamilton after he passed him and the win would have been his anyway.

Mhhm, there are many definitions for term "battle" so that one is certainly open for interpretation, but plenty of people on this thread are mentioning fights that didn't happen on the last lap at all, or list a number of choices instead of one definite... too bad

I enjoyed the de Angelis/Rosberg fight at the old Osteriechring but for me it was the 79 Villneuve/Arnoux fight at Dijon. Both great fights at classic tracks.

There's been some good ones from the British Superbike support series too - Superstock 1000 at Donington 2012, Motostar at Cadwell Park 2013 and pretty much any of the British Supersport races. ALMS had some great ones at Laguna Seca, Road America and Sebring too.

 

Not so much a battle, but the 250cc British GP at Donington Park in 2000 had an exciting last lap!

Herta losing second be only an inch or so was tough. Michigan in '03 as well. Barron had spun out of 4, and pushed himself into a battle with the best of that type of racing in Hornish, and beat him at the line.

Yup. You give those cars the ability to draft on straights (and Road America has those in plenty), good racing is abound. Plus everyone but Hargrove seemed to lift on the kink. That's just taking the fun out of that entire section of the course.

I think that was the second last lap, but the last lap of that race was still great due to Heidfeld, Alonso and Vettel (Ithink) scything through the field on inters.  Bourdais lost a chunk of places at the final chicane- nearly brought him to tears.

Michigan 2000 seemed like too obvious a choice as most must know it by now, but I don't think my heart has ever been pounding as fast at the end of a race as it was watching that battle play out.

But it's not the last lap, it's at the end of the penultimate lap.

True Mansell did his incredible overtake at the last corner of the penultimate lap but Berger came back at him on the final lap so technically I felt it qualified 😉
