I think Honda want another Japanese F1 driver, at least a few years down the line and, i suspect, the Mclaren/Honda/ART tie up will allow them to place one of their drivers in GP2 for as long as that deal is in place, Izawa is just the first guy to make that jump, pretty much a guinea pig. I think they'll keep an eye out for the next young up and coming Japanese driver and look to place him in GP2 with ART, in the mean time the Izawa types will take that place i think.

I'd think that too. I'd be surprised if they haven't been at least in contact with a certain Mr Kobayashi regarding that as well.

I think Palmer is a bit better than Coletti - he's had some success prior to GP2, unlike Stefano. Admittedly F2 wasn't a very high level championship, but I think he's about as good as his father i.e. he wouldn't particularly disgrace himself in F1, even if he's not the next Senna/Schumacher.

I think Palmer's quite good as well, certainly no worse than Max Chilton, and not far off the likes of Calado or Sam Bird. He's a decent racer, fast on one lap and seems to drive maturely for the most part. I also think he's improved a lot over his junior career.

I'm still undecided on Palmer. I think he's better than Chilton but i'd rate Calado ahead of him. Suppose he is one of the "experienced" drivers now so i guess he's a championship candidate.

Palmer is terribly average and not of F1 quality, at all. Its his 4th season in GP2, heck, even Max Chilton had a better record by this stage in his GP2 career and (no offense Max) he's one of the worst drivers to reach F1 since sodding Yuji Ide. Also, try looking at the quality of drivers in that F2 season when he finished 2nd, exceptionally bad. He may have improved marginally but it has far more do to with him hanging around for 4 years and having a large experience advantage over a lot of his competition, its Vincenzo Sospiri syndrome.

And i'm sorry, but to suggest he's not far off the likes of Calado and Bird, wow.  :drunk:

Sorry, rant over.

Well, I certainly don't think Palmer is far off Bird. Bird was forever driving in junior formulas and just manage good results against drivers much less experienced. IMO Palmer is in the same bracket as Bird, Leimer, Valsecchi, Razia, Ericsson, Chilton and so on. Still he may surprise if he goes to F1, like some others did (Petrov, Pastor, Koba...).

If anyone know a good stream site or 2 for Gp2 I'll be forever grateful for a pm. Been years since I've done any stream hunting!

Hulkenberg and Perez are perhaps not expendable, so assume you mean park him with Sauber. Next year McLaren will surely be the only Honda team, so farming out drivers may be more difficult ?

Forgot about that.  Since taking money from Abramovich, Sauber are dead to me.

The one caveat with Vandoorne is that most years of GP2 someone wins early in the season and then is a bit 'meh' for the rest of it. And it's usually a rookie.

How often has this happened to a rookie?  I agree that several seasons one driver has taken an initial win or two early on before putting in some less competitive performances later, but that's typically been a more experienced driver that loses some of his advantage as the promising rookies get up to speed (e.g., Razia in 2012).

I certainly wouldn't take Vandoorne's opening win as a harbinger of a mediocre season.

nope, second race's starting grid is the result of the first race, with the first 8 drivers in reverse order.

Pic won in his first weekend, maybe his first race, in 2010. Senna won in his second weekend in 2007, etc. Those are just off the top of my head. They weren't horrible the rest of the year, but they had their season-peak immediately.

Watching my first GP2 race. This is absolutely rubbish.

Too much overtaking making it impossible to enjoy the procession.

Nasr!

After being a constant last year once again the one to finish the second lap in first is the one to take the victory in the sprint race.

Nasr is a gentleman, after seeing what happened to Palmer yesterday he decided to return the favor.

He was in the midfield and lost his front wing crashing on someone (Binder? I don't really remember)

New to GP2 and seeing everyone talk about Nasr. What's the deal with him? Quick but unlucky? Quick but clumsy? Slow but fortunate?

Most of the atteintion is due to the fact that he was driving a Williams around in FP1.

He had quite the CV before GP2. He comfortable won Euro FBMW in his first year racing against a good field that had some drivers with experience and others talented rookies like Frijns, and winning British F3 with 6 races to go against his team mate Kevin Magnussen. But since he joined GP2 he's been many times close to win, but never managed to do so, be it his team or his own fault, just like today.

Edit: His situation is kind of funny and sad at the same time.

He came into GP2 as a "legitimate talent" but he's starting to lose momentum even more dramatically than Bianchi did in the series.

He's no mug, second in German F3 to the hugely talented Marvin Kirchhöfer isn't bad going, granted Marvin was a rookie and completely destroyed the field but still, he's got more going for him than qualifying suggested.

I don't think 30 quid for a day of BTCC action is that bad!?! Is there anything more expensive than that really, I go to Brands a lot because it's good value.

Basically; he has bad luck when he needs good luck, drives badly when given a prime opportunity, and spends the rest of the time in the same position he finished today.

I did say race entries rather than spectator entry. I won't argue that £30 to spectate is fair value.

Tio Ellinas in at MP motorsport to replace Lancaster, good to see him make the step up.

Canamasas in at Trident to replace Jeffries. So everyone will be avoiding the Trident cars as much as possible this weekend then.

So am I. We've been following the sponsor issues here and it was very disappointing when the sponsor backed out. It's a great opportunity for him.
