The trouble is that the AS Show is aimed at Piston Heads rather than real enthusiasts. Plenty of crap to buy etc.

Race Retro is where you meet the genuine enthusiasts.

There were groupon offers for the last couple of years, for £16 it was definitely worth it.  You'd think that a free ticket to autosport subscribers would be appropriate...

Well, there's no profit in me not going.  But there would be guaranteed extra footfall for the stand-holders &c.

I last photographed this car when it was racing at Oulton Park in the 70s, it was white then.

I went on Thursday and it was a great show. I spent the majority of my time in the engineering section, a little in the actual Autosport race car bit and no time at all in the Performance car section.
I would say definitely worth a visit for any racing fan, just don't go in the Pistonheads/Performance car section if that's not what you like!!
I did spend some time in the bar with lots of ex-racers and commentators too, great to see Brian Jones so fit and well and good luck to him for upcoming op.

Unless I missed out a section of the show (which is entirely possible) the usual vintage racing car display was nowhere to be found. I can find no mention of the VSCC in the programme. So, in the absence of old racing Bentleys, here is something different:

I didn't see him; in fact quite a few of the usual suspects seemed to be "elsewhere".

I'm usually quite a fan of this show, but I thought it was abysmal this year - far fewer interesting cars, stalls, or "stars".

Combined with the increased price of both tickets and parking, it felt like being the victim of a prank.

Couldn't agree more. The live section was pretty much an exact re run of last year also, very little new content throughout the show to engage the paying punter. With no discount codes available, steep ticket prices for juniors and food, drink and parking also at huge prices I'll definately give it a swerve next year and save myself  a heap of money ! :|

I presume that it was at the NEC which seems a poorly designed and worse organised place.

A grumpy old man asks how is this thread nostalgia, by the way?

I popped along on Thursday and the stupid Ryan Air style trickle pricing structure with parking not withstanding I found a concomitant mix of

(Surtees Cosworth TS7 which will be appearing at Mercedes World in June)

the good

06_IMG_5501sc.jpg

(Andy Robinsons 3000hp 500 cui nitro motor and chassis usually clothed in a '69 Camaro body for six second 1/4 mile runs)

the bad,

(Monster Tuning Discovery a demo vehicle I gather)

and the bonkers.

(Caterham Aeroseven Concept)

It was good to get a glimpse of the future,

the possibilities for which appear to include a race round the streets of London in 2015

It was also heartening to see plenty of young people in attendance even if some of them were a little too distracted by the Maxxis Tyres calender girls, I'm sure some will soon learn motor sport is the more reliably satisfying ;)

Listening to the radio on the day I heard a forecast predicting economic shrinking and deflation, heaven forbid that any like that will happen, but if it does the motorsport industry in all it's many forms will need all the support it can get in order to ensure that the sport we all love survives in any recogniseable form beyond the virtual.

The highlight of the show for me this year was Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus 72 R/5 coming back to life at Classic Team Lotus.......

Ted was there on Thursday (had a good chat), but not trading - he will be at Race Retro though.
I just enjoyed catching up with people, especially David Howes and geeing him up on restoring his AMC Javelin!!
