Hello,

I am currently developing an iPhone app to list all the races in various championships (Formula One, MotoGP, NASCAR, WEC…). I would like to know how you name the different circuits: do you use the orignal name even if it’s in a foreign language or do you translate it into English?
I am French and here we tend to translate all the circuits into French so it’s a little easier.

For example, which one do you use:
Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace or Interlagos
Circuit de Monaco or Monaco Circuit
Autodromo di Monza or Monza Circuit
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya or Barcelona Circuit

in WTTC, there’s the Circuito da Guia. How do you call that? Guai Circuit, Circuito da Guia or Macao Circuit?
Is there any particular rule?

Thanks for your help.

There is no hard and fast rule.

Usually the "easiest" name is used, and everyone will know what you're talking about.

In the examples you use, the most common names you'll hear are:

Interlagos

Monte Carlo or Monaco

Monza

Catalunya or Barcelona.

Macao

Another example is that Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is usally just called Montreal.

If you're unsure just ask.

I think the most common way is the location and in brackets the circuit name eg. Melbourne (albert park) zeltweg (red bull ring), interlagos (autodromo Carlos pace), Macau (guia), Barcelona (circuit de Catalonia)

Thank you for your answer.

My goal is to have for each track a name, a locality and a country.

For example :

  • Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia
  • Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain

But I was surprised to see on the formula 1 website that for Monza, it gives :

  • Autodromo di Monza, Monza, Italy

So I asked myself if english people use the original name or an english translation. In french, we use Circuit de Monza.

Another example in Moto GP :

  • Circuito de la Comunitat Valenciana. In french, we use Circuit de la Communauté de Valence. As en english person, do you use the original spanish name or do you translate it in Valencia Circuit ?

Thanks again for your help.

zeltweg (red bull ring),

Generally it was only known as Zeltrweg when it was the Osterreichring. But that would confuse it with the Zetlweg aerodrome that was used in 1964. Since the rebuild as the A1-Ring the alternative "region" name was usually Speilberg.

  • Circuito de la Comunitat Valenciana. In french, we use Circuit de la Communauté de Valence. As en english person, do you use the original spanish name or do you translate it in Valencia Circuit ?

Thanks again for your help.

In that case we would say Valencia Circuit or simply "Valencia", expecially as the street circuit isn't used any more.

Usually in English we'd cut out the "Circuit of ..." part of the original name and just use the name of the town/region that the circuit is associated with. However in more formal writing we would use the full name.

The exception to this is if the circuit is named after a person.

Examples:

For Montreal, it's either Circuit Gilles Villeneuve or Montreal but never Gilles Villeneuve.

For Interlagos, it's Autodromo Carlos Pace, or Interlagos, and never Carlos Pace or Carlos Pace Circuit.

For Imola, it's Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari or Imola but never Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit or some variation.

For Mexico City, it's either Autodromo Hermanos Rodgriguez or Mexico City, but never Rogriguez Brothers Circuit.

In general it follows English practice. We'd simply say Silverstone rather than the full name which is Silverstone Circuit, and others like Brands Hatch are simply that name and no other. In America it would be slightly different, as it's more common to include "... Raceway" or "...Speedway" in casual conversation. It's also common to use a number of names for the same place. Sears Point, Infineon and Sonoma are all used interchangeably, as are Road America and Elkhart Lake.

Thanks for your time and for all these examples.

I think I will keep the original name as it's given on the Formula 1 or Moto GP website.

In this case, I'll have the original track name, the locality and the country, so I think it will be understandable.

For exemple, the 2014 formula 1 season :

  • Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia
  • Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain
  • Shanghai International Circuit, Shanghai, China
  • Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Catalunya, Spain
  • Circuit de Monaco, Monte Carlo, Monte Carlo
  • Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montréal, Canada
  • Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria
  • Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Great Britain
  • Hockenheimring, Hockenheim, Germany
  • Hungaroring, Budapest, Hungary
  • Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
  • Autodromo di Monza, Monza, Italy
  • Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore, Singapore
  • Suzuka Circuit, Suzuka, Japan
  • Sochi International Street Circuit, Sochi, Russia
  • Circuit of The Americas, Austin, USA
  • Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, São Paulo, Brazil
  • Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi

Many tracks in Asia have Circuit in their name.

Thanks again. It's nice to find people ready to help.

Ok, great

Need to do the same with all the others championships.

Hopefully, it'll be easier with NASCAR

This works well. Easy to understand as well with the location of the tracks included as most go by nearby city/village names !

Thanks Ollebompa.

The first version of the app is being validated by Apple. It should be soon on the App Store.

For the moment it will be a simple list of races but I have a lot of feature to add in the near future.
