I still think that Whitmarsh may be moved up the ladder in McLaren's scheme of things. Stranger things have happened. This is a good move for Lotus if they could pull it off

Can't say that the pun isn't much deserved...

 

However, Lotus may actually benefit properly from hiring Whitmarsh. He's a likable fella, and would positively influence the image of Lotus... and if paid on time i guess he may choose to work with them, especially if McLaren shows him the door.

If it happens it's a good move for both parties. Maybe Whimarsh needs to break out and be his own man to really flourish, similar to Lewis...

No pole or 2014 F1 nose could be remotely long enough to touch Lotus for him to even consider that job.  I suggest he shop his services to a proper auto manufacturer (Not Mercedes) and see where they may want to effectively use his services.

Anyone with a craving for racing would choose B -the chance to redeem yourself with a ready made excuse if it doesnt work out

Yes. Martin was supposedly successor in training to Ron and this is known to everyone inside the sport, or involved (media, long time fans etc.). However, the fact that Martin's new role wasn't announced at the same time as replacing him in his current role, it is a little discomforting. Seems like Ron is going to have to hire some new person for training to be a successor (well, till Ron has a fit it seems ), if the feelers that you can read on internet are true. That is true both ways, when McLaren retain Martin, or even if they don't. I personally like Martin, as he's a lot more genuine (well, comes across as such), much more pleasant than his Ron-ness who takes a few minutes and a few convoluted sentences to explain why you should trust him. Then again, it may be nothing. There may be a simple reorganising exercise in motion at McLaren, streamlining positions as the organisation is growing. Happens a fair bit often than most of us realise. Let us see how the cards play out.

That's like suggesting a racing driver should accept a non-driving third driver slot as long as he is well paid.

 

There is something like pride, self esteem, personal goals or ambitions etc. Perhaps Whitmarsh wouldn't want to work at McLaren anymore after being ousted from his TP job, after all he did spend 20 years training for it and did as well as Ronnie in the few years he has been at the helm. Or perhaps the new position is a 'Japanese cellar-no window' kind of job offer? Perhaps he likes racing and still wants to be involved in F1?

There are ways to make people leave of their own accord. 

 

Put him in a room miles from anywhere overseeing the purchasing of replacement floor tiles for the MTC. An important job in Ron's eyes. Or make him the Obersturmbahnfuhrer of the clear desk policy, the scourge of the in-tray.

 

Hopefully he will get what he deserves, he seems a likeable chap and has much experience.
