I've got a question, and it is NOT a rhetorical one: in the past years, has Villeneuve jr. praised anything or anyone in F1?

If I could google it, I would. But what search terms do you type in?

Why does it matter if he has or not?

Because if Brundle says to Jacques: 'Give something back to the sport,' it would be a unjustified remark if Villeneuve sometimes praised things or persons in F1.

incidentally very comfortable with constructive criticism of F1 just don't like blanket dismissal of sport/drivers without logical solutions

So JV needs to write up solutions to every issue in F1 before answering random questions in an interview?

Nice logic there Martin...

JV is entitled to his opinion, was asked a question regarding his opinion and replied with his opinion.  MB is entitled to an opinion regarding the current state of F1.  If he has something positive to say about current F1 and wants to "give back" he should certainly do so.  I can't help but notice when he did choose to speak out on the subject, it was merely to be critical of any ex-driver who spoke an opinion which was not in support of the current state of F1.  OK MB, you are angered.  What are the positives in today's F1 as you see them?  Did your tweet generate anything beyond publicity for yourself or give back to the sport in any way?  From the tweet, I don't know if MB disagrees with JV's opinion or just the fact that JV spoke out in the press.

MB's rant contributed nothing to the discussion.  If he would like to debate negative statements about F1, he should actually do so.

The key words here are logical and constructive. After all, this is what F1 is best at.

Problem: Complaining advertisers and reduced revenue.

Reason: Dropping TV audiences towards the end of the season.

Cause: Championship won before the final round.

Constructive criticism: The title decider should be postponed to the final race in Abu Dhabi wherever it takes place.

Logical solution: More points for the final round(s).

As an aside, I love how the first reply to Sky's Brundle is "Some people are just stuck in their ways and like to grumble ;)".

Why does it matter if he has or not?

To estabilish whether his comments are entirely critical and depreciating or not and thus form a better opinion over how credible he is.

I think Brundle was/is wrong about JV. But, like JV, he is entitles to his opinion and expression of it.

Is Brundle now going to come out against Newey for his comments?

Newey is really out of line with this one. It's time he starts giving something back to the sport that made him such a rich man.

In all seriousness, Newey makes a good point: 'Whether it gets changed for subsequent seasons or not is going to depend on public opinion post the end of the season. If, of course, viewing figures are much higher and people aren't turning off in protest then it will be deemed a success and will continue.'

Basically he's telling the fans to turn off in protest!

He isn't telling fans to do that, he's saying that lower viewing figures it's the only thing Bernie would listen to.

If Abu Dhabi ends up having higher viewing figures for any reason then he'll see it as his new points being a success and will use it to extend it to the 3 race triple points plan he always wanted.

He's confirming what people have been saying all along: it's about the money.

At least I can be happy knowing that Ecclestone and his cronies aren't getting any of mine. They can take their Pay-TV someplace else.

Right, and since 95% of fans don't want the double points what are we going to do about it? Follow Newey's suggestion?

I'm not as optimistic as that. I think most people will either not care, think it's something special and thus cool, or be compulsive viewers whose desire to watch F1 is greater than their opposition to these new rules.

But we'll see. I'm mostly disappointed in the teams for supporting this nonsense, and I hope it backfires on them by having the titles won in the last race with the use of these extra points.

I don't believe for a second that 95% of fans would turn off, I just hope some do. I personally hope the championship is decided early just to spite Bernie and his minions.

Brundle will be quiet now.  He won't tackle Newey.

.. the real reason is simply that the big push is now for the American market which is why it's no coincidence drivers suddenly get fixed numbers and certain races worth more as that is how it's done in Nascar. This follows the push to get much more overtaking happening and an increase in safety cars usage.

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey has criticised Formula 1's double points finale format, suggesting it cheapens the sport. "It makes it just a little bit WWF to me."

WWF = World Wrestling Federation = Professional wrestling. A mode of spectacle which combines athletics and theatrical performance. The matches have predetermined outcomes in order to heighten entertainment value.

Also known around the world as American wrestling. Basically taking a perfectly good sport and turning it into something that made it popular in America.

I don't understand what his issue is.

F1 is an evolving/transitional sport, which would naturally create different periods of "variable" excitement trough that process. Its only natural.. i think that the current driver line up is very good overall, and the cars for this year might deliver some interesting racing.

Of course you will have to take under account personal views on the matter.. nostalgic feelings are unavoidable.

You can see a similar situation even in sports that are "classical" in the sense of rule changing, etc. After Zidane and Ronaldo retired, i kind of lost interest in the sport of football... i keep saying to myself that when they were around the game was better overall, which is silly since the quality is probably even higher now with Messi and CR, but to me it doesn't matter since Ronaldo and Zidane is who i grew up watching.

I am guessing its the same with Senna vs. Prost or MS vs Hakkinen...

Anyway, last season was kind of boring, but I doubt 2014 will be like that at all..

enjoy the sport :)

It is called WWE now, so the name WWF1 is for grabs. Looks like Bernie took the opportunity.

MBrundle speaks his mind about a driver who's been fortunate to win a WDC in a dominant team with the best car and raises a valid question regarding the motif of JV other than creating sensationalist quote and gets slated.

Farsailor :

"And you did watch F1 back then? JV was considered one of the top 3 if not 2 drivers in f1 right up til say 2002-2003, finished 7th in the championship in 2001 & 2002 in a crap car. That's about as high as Brundle ever finished a season in F1."

Farsailor, Good point, I'd help you out by drumming home some of the great performances by the brilliant on his day JV, but i've done plenty of that in my time and lets face it a jv hater isnt willing to reason. Its his cocky outspoken personality they cant get along with..

All one needs to watch is Jv's qualy lap in 98 williams on youtube if they want some excitement and to see a car on the edge.

Speak loud, get sideways and live long jv!
