Who are the highest-paid players in Sprint Cup? The richest teams? Here are the hard numbers according to Forbes magazine, and they make for interesting reading.

Interesting that Danica comes in 9th at $13.5 million thats a good pay day for a moderate tallent. Just goes to show that sometimes being a woman is an advantage.

Endorsements\marketing\etc. This chart is pretty much about marketing value to sponsors, hence Jr. being first.

Danica's also a good measure of just how much prize money there is in NASCAR. She finished 27th in points with over $3million. That will be split with the team, but if you had zero salary and zero endorsements and just ran all the races, you'd still be rich.

Only racing series where you can run a mid-pack, back-marker car and still come out on top at the end of the season.

Hence S&P. At one point nearly a third of the Nationwide field were start and park entries.

The main takeaway for me is Hendrick is winning at driver selection, which has a sort of multiplying effect.

Hendrick wins at everything, like that Get Out of Jail Free Card.

It's like there's a fork in the road, or a phonecall from the Devil, and you become Hendrick or you become Roush-Fenway.

Though one wonders how much even better Hendrick might have fared with Keselowski and Kyle Busch still on board.

They'd be killing it in Nationwide, that's for sure.

The line up would not be as handsome as it currently is. I know that sounds irrelevant, but I know a few ladies who pull for drivers that they think are good looking.

I'm interested in the crazy feedback loop caused by fans pulling for whichever everyday brand they like best. How do we know that Kyle Busch is $3 million popular, and it's not just M&Ms fans bulking out the positive responses?

Looks like he spent that much on M&Ms last year.

Oh come on it was only bribery.

Gross oversimplification, but one could say Roush is the engineering company and Hendrick is the marketing outfit.

What is Gibbs then? They've got the funding, they've got the drivers, but it's just not 'there' consistently.

I was speaking more of focus and company philosophy rather than outcomes. This is what I find so interesting about the story: Hendrick is demonstrably better at picking drivers, which wins the team more sponsorship $$$, which allows them to outspend and outperform on the engineering side. If Hendrick has a $349 million footprint and Roush has a $157 million footprint, we know who is likely to win the technology battle. Funding doesn't equal results, but it's a pretty fair first-order approximation.

They are the team with Kyle Busch in place of Jimmie Johnson.

I think Stewart-Haas has become the alternative Hendrick. The Hendrick roster is very clean and corporate. And but for Danica, Stewart-Haas is the 'troublemakers'/characters.

Gross oversimplification, but you see what I mean.

Danica + Hendrick = open a bank vault

And where Hendrick is a marketing team, Penske is the corporate team. If I were shopping a NASCAR sponsor it'd probably be the first place I stopped.

Most definitely. I'd throw Roush-Fenway in there as well, just because the baseball cross-marketing potential connection with the team.

On the other hand, Roush spent a ton building a farm system to bring drivers up through Trucks and Busch/Nationwide and found or developed great drivers -- Biffle, Cousin Carl.

But still, they aren't the superstar lineup Hendrick was able to assemble.

That is the only issue with Roush-Fenway. They chose to not buy the talent, but develop it. That was their decision. And has usually paid off as of late.

Stewart-Haas is almost like a Hendrick satellite team.

Yeah but with a divergent strategy.

I was thinking about the farm team system last night. I can't think of any recent drivers that came into Cup with a Swan or Levine Family Racing or similar, made a mark, and worked their way up the ladder.

Is that because

-If you're good you get spotted much earlier

-You only advance if you get spotted earlier and signed for a (good)team already in Cup

-Various combos of the above

It seems like the Levines/Swans/etc/et al tend to be filled by drivers who were briefly names but for whatever reason weren't able to follow through. Reed Sorenson used to be a Ganassi guy. Cole Whitt was Red Bull before they disappeared, Kvapil drove for Penske of all places, etc.
