Seeing how long it takes to fix this years cars, and how quickly problems seem to appear. Is it possible most teams will be wanting to give FP3 a miss in case something goes wrong, which will then mean you miss qualifying.

How busy do you think FP3 will be this season especially in the early rounds?

I'm not really on board with that. I see where you're coming from, but "Let's not use the practice sessions for what they're for, let's wait until the race to see what's gonna break" is not how you win titles. It's not even how you qualify 19th.

F1 teams are smart enough to know you can't just pull a rug over a hole in the floor and hope no one walks on it, nyuk nyuk nyuk.

their fixes will also get considerably quicker as they are still learning the fixes at the moment

Yep. 3 hours diagnosing a problem in Australia can easily be a 3-minute fix by Spain.

I wonder if with the current Red-Bull situation will we see the RB10 up front from second 0 of FP1?

Remembering that during the last couple of years, RB would sometimes somewhat disregard FP1, only running at the very end of each session.

They will only do a shakedown. The new systems have way more parts than the V8. Bring back the t-car...

Not doing any setup work for qualifying doesn't seem a good strategy. Besides, if the car breaks in Q1 instead of FP3... not a big gain.

Depends how far from the pitlane the drivers are when they break down. They may hitch a lift, but running shouldn't be discounted.

Should the return of broken down cars be sped up due to potential high attrition rates

I don't expect any less running really. FP3 is always used to setup the car for qualifying, so teams can't afford to miss that. The only thing I could see happening is them swapping FP2 and FP3 around, meaning setting up the car for quali already on Friday and using Saturday morning for slower long runs with less risk of crashing the car.

Merc changed an engine in around 3 hours today, maybe a little more. The minimum is 2 hours between sessions from FP3>Q, is a little longer for FP1>2. Maybe with ultra high workload on + extra panic it could be done, especially with a car being returned before the end of a session if it stops on track. If they have crash damage though...

Alonso missed two qualifications due to FP3 crashes in the past couple of years. And that is with an easier to build car.
