What a finish!

I've had a soft spot for Miller Light cars since Bobby Rahal ran out of fuel on the last lap of the 1997 Rio 400. This is sort of payback for that day, though ironically, that was a Penske winning that day too.

Yep. As long as there's not more than 16 different winners before the Chase starts. Then they use points or maybe random draw or maybe the just put Jeff Gordon in for the hell of it again. But don't worry about having 17 winners. There's like a 0.01% chance of that happening. Although...this is NASCAR so maybe they'll figure out a way for that happen because they love them some drama. How many "debris" cautions does it take to get 17 different winners?

Or F1 could not ask for deliberately weakened tyres that 'go off' and then complain when they do...

Once again the Autosport thread is more entertaining than the race.

What I am liking though, is that the racers can run below the white line (selected races only right?).  It is fun to watch.

I am also happy for a crash free race.  If thats blasphemy, I'll sit in the corner for 8 minutes.

Lastly, I am happy for PSP almost getting a top 20 after languishing further down most of the race.

Lastly, lastly, Vegas is missing an opportunity with invisibris over-unders, it would be the most popular bet.

This is another one of those annoying things I'm only 90% sure of but I *think* lines regarding track boundaries are only actual rules at Daytona and Talladega, and that you can freely dip below them at any other track. Someone here will know if this is incorrect.

Behold, a true NASCAR rarity: the pass in the grass.

That, too.

I do give my sympathy to Pirelli, or for that matter anyone that has to deal w/ F1 rule writers.

But then again, I've had the experience of Pirelli P Zeros on one of the rides I had that lasted about 10K miles before they were toast, which is BS

The fact that Little E went so far on his tires yesterday and was still turning fast laps proves that A) Goodyear knows how to make a stout race tire, or B) they are hard as rocks and must be a bitch to race on.

Well that is what the commentators say, but the rules do seem to change freely in NASCAR.

No no no. Nascar rules don't change, it's REFCAR that keeps changing stuff around.

Edit: Hmmm... Monday and.... only NW penalties? Wow...

I've heard that complaint often.

I think a much softer tire would make races more interesting because the driver would have a bit of input. Remember how Rockingham used to be?

Ideally the tires would go off before you ran the thing out of gas. But it'd be close, making fuel runs a bit more interesting.

I'm not trying to promote wreck-strewn races like the plate tracks, but wonder if the lack of accidents at races like Vegas results from a lack of racing related to the harder tires. As long as a balance with safety is maintained softer would likely provide better racing on both short and long runs, and make the drivers less at the mercy of pit strategy/track position.

Loosely related, another flaw that's been mentioned regarding this points system is it doesn't really encourage drivers to push when a win seems unlikely. Before this year a single position anywhere in the field could ultimately decide the championship or a Chase berth.

Actually, NASCAR engines have always been more than the tires can handle, I think the balance is right. I'm actually pretty happy there is no tire war in NASCAR, and you have to admit, they still have to lift in the corners and there were some hairball saves of tail happy cars at a buck eighty last weekend. The tires are soft enough to get a save here and there, so that's all good.

There were tire wars in NASCAR at one time and they led to this:

Hoosier vs. Goodyear, 1994

Pirelli could take a lesson from Goodyear on how to make durable tires...

NASCAR has the advantage in that they allow Goodyear to test year round, on the actual circuits with the actual cars and the primary drivers.  (actually they do more than allow, they mandate it...)  It's on a rotating schedule so there are a few teams each time, usually each manufacturer is represented with the tests being a couple of days though some have been single day.

The primary issue in F1 with the tires isn't so much the tire as it is with the environment in which the tire is developed and tested.  If they want better tires they need to allow for in season testing on current cars and circuits.

Yeah, but that is unpratical in the current paranoia stricken F1. Remember what happened with the Mercedes test and the hilarious scenario of Pirelli saying they had no car to test this year.

Every team is doing one day of Pirelli-only testing this year. They released the schedule last week.

Busy day, and since it's round 1 of F1 some good timing is needed to prevent earlier sinking. Keep in mind we are at a disavantage with the trucks still on winter break.

Thread will be up in about an hour, OP is done but needs a final review.

You actually review your OP before posting?  I don't know if that's in the spirit of things...or even allowed, really :D
