I was reading about the history of Indycar, and came across the USAC National Championship Trail which between 1956-1970 had rounds that involved Road Races, Paved Ovals, Dirt Ovals and Hill Climbs. This made me think if such a championship would be possible these days, which could involve different disciplines such as races, time trials, asphalt, dirt, road courses, street circuits, ovals, sprint races, endurance races, etc.

Well, you've got Nascar Trucks which go to Eldora and some road courses (Mosport last year I believe).

The USAC trail only really got that varied for a brief spell in the late 60s, but I agree with the sentiment. Shame the board tracks never survived too!

The cars most capable of this kind of variety would be rally cars.

I suspect a championship like this simply would not be feasible. I don't think there would be enough people interested enough in the various disciplines to cover the costs.

I would like nothing more than the 'Triple Crown of Motorsport' deciding who the head-honcho is, year-in year-out.

I don't think you've understood the concept - it's about drivers having the freedom to use any kind of car on any kind of surface or in any kind of format.

I still think F1 because of the Tilke invasion of new circuits has lost a lot of it's circuit variety... there used to be the full Hockenheim 220mph blast through the forest, the banked turns and insane speeds of the Osterreichring, the right angled American street circuits of Detroit/Long Beach/Phoenix as well... it was more of an overall test of the car IMO than now where the only real variety on the calendar comes from Monaco, Canada, Spa and Monza, possibly Singapore as well but that's a BIG street track. Everything else requires the same amount of downforce, similar gear ratios etc.

I believe it was SonnyViceR on another thread that mentioned that Albert Park is the only FIA Grade 1 circuit with no tarmac runoffs... regardless of what you think of modern safety features that's quite a sobering fact.

I'm not asking for the mid-60's USAC kind of variety, which sounds like it would've been fantastic to follow at the time, but just bring some different challenges to F1.

Nowhere near that involved but back in the mid-1980s NASCAR briefly flirted with a "L-R" series that included specially built road course cars. Can't remember how it related to the Cup schedule and it never panned out, but I do remember pictures of a completed concept car, may have been a Pontiac Sunbird or along those lines.

For me, the closest thing these days is IndyCar -- super speedways, short ovals, street courses and road courses.

This. It's just a shame that it's a one chassis series, but we can't have everything in life.
