So this mapping freeze - how does it work in reality?

Given the complexity of mapping the various components that make up the PU or indeed possible multiple ECU's that control the whole the PU, what can and can't be done now.

 

Obviously we have passed the first mechanical and physical basic internal combustion deadline now but how can the electronics be manipulated?

where does the idea/premise comes from that there is a "mapping freeze" in place?

Gear ratios are fixed for the season, with 1 joker.

 

Last year, you could have a base map, and 4 different mappings for the first 4 races. Thereafter, your mapping must be within +-2% of the threshold level. Not sure what type of arrangement is available for 2014. Anyone?
