Very impressed by Ricciardo. Going up against a 4xWDC and splits the Mercs to get on the front row in very difficult conditions. The lad has a fire inside him. I look forward to seeing how he develops.

Yes, I never suspected Ricciardo was this good. Even though driving a Red Bull makes things easier, delivering like he has on his first race with the team, with all the pressure on his shoulders, being inches close to pole position. The whole thing in wet conditions. It was no easy feat. I'm really impressed.

Me too. I have to say that both Button and Vettel were a little bit humbled by their new teammates. Yeah, Button perhaps lifted during the yellows, Vettel had problems... (who didn't in this weather)... but I had not expected both Vettel and Button to be beaten by their teammates, especially in these kind of conditions.

The gesture originates in the fact that Vettel almost lost the digit in a Renault WSR crash at Spa in 2006.

No,he denied that, and he was celebrating victories showing the index finger even before that Spa accident.

I think that in these kind of conditions, unexpected results are no less, but more likely to happen. ;)

The middle finger is a rude gesture, not the index finger. The gesture originates in the fact that Vettel almost lost the digit in a Renault WSR crash at Spa in 2006. People simply didn't bother to find out.

Didn't realise that he raced in World Series by Renault in the days before he started in Formula BMW ;) - Some people simply don't bother to find out!

first of all, congrats to Hamilton for a great start to 2014... and Mercedes. So testing form was not exaggerated and they're quite fast. RBR have seemingly got on top of most of their issues, so that's good. Ferrari, let us leave that for may be another race or two. Whatever happened to Williams? Were they running with dry set-up or something?

To people beating on about Vettel's finger:

So there's such a thing as bad winner, but we haven't seen Vettel distributing shirts saying "i lost" to others while wearing "i won, suckaz!" or something... 1Nevermid that he's got the best record of the current lot, but after winning races and championships i hold no grudges against anyone about how they would celebrate. I mean, i may not necessarily approve, but to denounce them publicly. FHS not many here are at the top of the pile at what we do... The fact that some even see it as a reason to boo someone, well that is just a proof of how entitled we feel we are and that how low tolerance towards each other has become.

How about this, why not win a world championship (i mean you could even set a world record for number of farts per minute or something), and then may be you could buy yourself that Vettel pinata(with the index finger pointing) you've always wanted and go nuts at it. Come to think of it, i believe i will copyright that idea and will see if i could license such a deal from RBR. Heck, seemingly there's a lot of money to be made off Brit and Aussie fans. :D Plus, the forums could be free of whinging about how Vettel kicked their cat/ dog or whatever.

They admit they lack rear downforce a bit and they have troubles with getting intermediate/wet tyres to the right temperatures. But they expect a better pace on dry.

Very good. It´s very funny that 99% of the people who complain about winners attitude are the ones who never won anything.

I did a little search on google and SV has a total of 38 wins? A bit hard to find a unique celebration for each time...

Not sure who you're refering to? Lewis didn't start this high on his first qualy, and was behind his teammate too.

Must be JV!  But he took pole on his first F1 race.

It was in fact Lewis, cause he delivered right away and against a very strong teammate. Im too young to have correct memories about JV :p

I don't like Vettel but i don't think he has done anything that warrants being booed. Booing because of Multi 21. Would anyone here be booing if their favorite driver did what Seb did? I really can't fault the guy for wanting to win. For me to boo someone they would have do do something truly awe full like intentionally running another driver off the road. Then it's justified. Showing respect for your competitors is the foundation of good sportsmanship.

And I bet Webber is kicking himself hard in the a** right now seeing that the car is great, Vettel is struggling without ebd and that he could have had pole for his home Australian race!

Mark is definitely thinking "this feels like it could have been my year!"

Haha possibly but I think Mak will be happy where he is. It seems that Porsche might be very quik in the 2014 Le Mans series.

The majority of the responders, here in Forumland, have been jawing about Red Bull's poor performance.  What makes you conclude Ricciardo had it easier because he was driving a Red Bull?

Webber is probably laughing at Vettel having problems, but since Webber's laughter is echoing around the empty room full of his F1 Championships I don't think Vettel minds too much.

Very poetic, but sadly true.

It's clearly a very good car, possibly the 3rd best (if not 2nd) already. It was only hampered by the Renault PU but the Red Bull software engineers seem to have solved even that. Once they have more miles under their belt to fine tune the car / settings, they'll be back at the front.

True... Still one can say that, even if you take their teammates out of the equation, Magnussen and Ricciardo exceeded expectations, not with luck but with plain excellent driving. Buttton disappointed today, Vettel yesterday.

1-0 for the newbies on the team, in my eyes.

Renault's engine engineer Thierry Salvi said after qualifying, that Vettels engine was hampered by a sensor failure. Taking the problems into account, Vettel's performance probably wasn't that bad at all.

I think showing respect for your team (especially one that has guided you to 3 WDC's), and your team-mate comes first. Then show respect for the fans, the traditions of the sport, fair play and your competition.

A fair few of the teams this year look like they've got shlongs attached to the nose, but the STR has to be the worst offender in that department...

Qualifying was a good watch. Great to see Ricciardo draw first blood and establish himself right from the start, getting the better of Vettel and sending a clear message in the process. The 2 rookies did a great job as well. Really looking foward to the race.

It doesn't upset me. In fact I quite enjoy the scenario. :) I always thought that a 3rd place of Schumacher in a 1992 Benetton was much more spectacular to watch than a dominant win in a 2003 Ferrari. But I have a pathological dislike for dishonest and downright despicable people, who think that because they support one driver, they need to hate all others and spend their time posting hateful texts in internet forums. We're looking at the most exciting season in years and all some people have time for is frolicking about their hated drivers' mishaps. Dang, how sad is that?

Road cars are a good example, the whole advantage of turbo engines is the immense torque and power at low RPM. My car (9-3) only has 200HP but there's a big surge of torque that PEAKS at 2,500RPM. A NA engine is more likely to do that at double the revs.

Hmm ... I think a road car that is closer to these new F1 cars might well be the Toyota Prius.

Talking of fuel economy: its an unknown at the moment, and this track uses a lot of fuel. So ... we'll know by the end of the race which engines use the most fuel. Webber said yesterday that Ferrari uses more fuel, and the Merc and Renault about the same. Interestingly, the RBR has a HUGE intercooler ... how can that be for keeping the engine cooler? If it's there to improve fuel economy, then RBR may get the most out of the Renault power plant. Although Mercedes have their compressor in front of the engine, where it will not pick up radiated heat from the exhaust turbine ... We don't have any idea about fuel usage yet ... 10 minutes before race end, and we'll know a lot more.

Very relieved for Ricciardo that he did not have Seb's car. Because if he did have, he might be now labelled as a poor driver ... I hope he gets away well at the start. I presume RBR have that all worked out ...

Toyota Preeyus/ Pryus... :rotfl:

Actually, now that i have stopped laughing, i agree with you. Most and not just the hybrids from Toyota, they actually drive/ recharge as the need be.

@Alfisti

Superchargers are driven by the engine, thus are quicker to spool.

Turbochargers are driven by the exhaust, and so aren't quick to spool.

Theoretically, based on common sense derived from the working principle, a turbocharged engine can't possibly come close to how quick the power/ torque comes in a supercharged engine. Well, unless the supercharger is absolutely hopeless. How low in the rpm range the turbo delivers the power is mostly down to effectiveness of the turbo. Big turbos take time to spool, and small ones do so quickly, and so you have your power quicker.

Engine design is a tricky so and so, and based on how you want it, high/ low revving, you could do reasonably good with a naturally aspirated engine with most of the torque delivered early in the rev-range. However, turbochargers (and superchargers) increase the efficiency of the engine, so ofcourse absolute numbers will be better.

I apologise if you already knew this all and then some...

So RB for the championship, as I predicted. No one can stop them

Yeah, there clearly isn't another team that is ahead of them at the moment..oh wait
