Still confused about why teams would want to miss FP3..saving engines, sure but then with such limited testing specially for the renault teams, surely ud think theyd want every lap they can get before quali and race.

I think mechanics will get faster changing stuff though once they get a hang of the thousand components in the car.

Engine life is still a worry, teams will probably still run a lot in Aus, there is alot still to be tested... but GPs in the 2nd half of the season?...pftt

There should be a new law designating 2 or 3 engines just for FPs... same way they have tires just for FPs.

My thinking also.

Will there be an abundance of red flags though ?

Unless there is a serious accident, they wont red flag  practise sessions. It's not like testing. Anyone stopping on track can be easily covered by yellow flags.

I think for Renault teams it is probably a no-brainer to go out in FP3. Sorting out problems is more important than qualy positions for them.

I think it's time to re-introduce the spare car if it's repair time that the teams are so concerned about.

To properly implement such a change, the spare car's individual PU components would count towards the allotted 5 per year.

They'll get quicker at building up a car/ changing bits. Tbh if you needed an engine change of new chassis post fp3 they rarely got it done in time

I'll laugh the roof off if Vettel grabs pole and leads every lap until the finish line on Sunday. The entire winter testing dilemma would become the laughing stock of the year. As will the entire championship.  :smoking:

Never rule out redbull, according to merc enginers. Torro Rosso with full power engine is faster than ferrari.

I'll laugh the roof off if Dan blows Sebi into the weeds but that's not likely either.  Though it's a question for me if all the cars are going to be unpredictable on braking/turn-in and how well Vettel is going to get on with that.

Link to source -- or anything that would make the statement hold up to any reasonable scrutiny?

Are the Merc engineers involved in an unknown spy-gate; for them -- and by extention you -- to be privvy about such information?

No - they decided to keep it to 1.5 hours but there are extra tyres for the first 30mins only which have to be handed back to encourage running and they are also allowed to swop drivers during FP1 and 2 if they wish.

Very much doubt i'll be there, depends on how many/few cars are circulating i suppose, more than one and i'll be glued to the screen, might have a play with the new timing app but we'll see.

Anyone have any rituals for the start of the season proper ? We've got the bacon & eggs in, the Guinness and Sambuca chilling,(not for simultaneous consumption) plenty of snacky stuff to scoff, love this part, the anticipation, the sense of occasion, the fact that its almost guaranteed that the doorbell wont be ringing, the phone wont either, no neighbours dropping in, no distractions whatsoever, probably a little selfish but its a few hours of self indulgence, there's only season opener, and this year Kimi back in Ferrari, whats not to look forward to ?.

There is always a dispensation to allow cars that haven't met the 107% time.

I was pretty disturbed to see Whiting using the word 'calculation' with regard to working out how much fuel people have used. They should know for sure or not. There can't be any interpretation on this other wise I can see big trouble ahead...

Good to read that the excitements building in others, it feels like the last few hours, and the four still to go have been and will be painfully slow in passing but we're almost there, the start proper of what may prove to be one the most contentious seasons in recent history, mechanical breakdowns, mental breakdowns, tears tantrums and triumphs,(No, i dont mean in this thread  )  the potential for upsets is all but guaranteed, there'll be those who miss by a mile, and those who'll miss by a metre, will those who start strong finish in the same vein ? will the tortoise catch and pass the hare ? Ron thinks it might, whatever it brings it could be edge of the seat stuff, can't wait!.

The raceweekend has now officially started in Oz...

Other than where i am the only other place i'd love to be is perhaps keeping chumma company somewhere around the last corner, sadly i have to settle for second best but its doesn't dampen the anticipation, there's just so much to look forward to and to relearn, hopefully on Sat/Sun chumma can really tell us for instance just what 22 V6T's sound like just before the lights go out.

Ericsson. Though I bet a stoppage due to engine or electronics will happen far earlier than a crash.

The FP1 transmission starts at 1.00 AM GMT, or in 2 hours 49 mins, but there is a "Gear up for Australia" show which starts 15 minutes beforehand.

It's only a matter of time before someone makes the traditional pronouncement: "That's it. Season over!".

I won't be bothering with any late night shenanigans this time around. It seems just a few weeks ago that we had the Brazilian GP. Qualifying will be a good enough start to the season for me.

I wonder if the the mechanics get drug tested?  If I were TP, it would be Modafinil and energy drinks several times a day. :smoking: .
