A thread to discuss the Toro Rosso drivers.  :)

Last year

Vergne: Toro Rosso (15th, 13 pts)

Kvyat: GP3 Series champion

This is going to be interesting for multiple reasons when you consider Kvyat's age. I still think Kvyat is far, far too young for an F1 drive, and I fear that we could see echo's of Alguersuari here.

Personally, I'd have liked to see Kvyat in GP2 this year, but the Red Bull bosses clearly decided otherwise. Hopefully they stick with Kvyat for at least two years, even if this year does not go according to plan.

Vergne should win this battle fairly comfortably, although if Kvyat does equal Vergne's pace, that might ring alarm bells about Vergne's Toro Rosso future.

I have high hopes for Kvyat, so I expect him to do a respectable job against JEV this season. He's very young and has very little experience in F1, so the first races should be just about learning how F1 works. I do think that by the end of the year, he could start beating JEV at qualy at least.

If I've done my maths correctly, I think that if Kvyat gets a point in Melbourne or Malaysia, he'll beat Vettel's record of F1's youngest point scorer. Let's see if he can do it :)

Expecting Vergne to dismantle Kvyat to be honest.

Kvyat looked totally misplaced in second free atleast. Even weaving when letting faster drivers by…!

Nice effort by Kvyat today, even if he did bin it at the end of Q3.

Daniil is the goods.  I have no doubt, which is why I immediately snatched him up, much like Kimi and Seb.   He is fantastic and has a great attitude - despite the snarling from the balcony section, he stays cheerfully optimistic.  He readily admits he has lots to learn and is pretty modest about his achievements so far - despite their being damn stellar.   Looking forward to what he will do tomorrow.

Very good qualifying from Kvyat (even with the brush on the wall). He looked totally out of his depth in practise so to pull it together and in such tricky conditions is very impressive.

I will watch this year with interest, I thought he was the standout driver from GP2/3 last year but it is a huge jump to F1 for him so he needs to be given time to get to grips with it all but he is certainly one to watch.

This duo reminds me of Heidfeld vs Raikkonen in 2001.

Nice comparison actually considering that was also Heidfeld's third season.

Close between them, Vergne may have uppper hand in qualifying towards end of season Kvyat will be beating him on occasion, in the races over the season Kvyat will become stronger and stronger.

Very, very happy with Dany's race. He's now the youngest ever points scorer in F1!

He's one of the drivers with less preseason testing and less km in a F1 and he was battling with Kimi and finished just behind his more experienced teammate. JEV will have to work to beat him this season.

I remember how many people said TR had chosen the wrong guy and I'm very happy that's he's already proving them wrong :)

At the end of the race JEV was really pleased with the car, but ha admitted he made two mistakes against Bottas and Raiko. The first one against Bottas he was trying to get a good position for the acceleration but he put a wheel in the grass, and against Raiko he missed his braking.

Really sursprised by Kvyat, looks like a promising lad

A much more interesting question: is Kvyat happen to be the youngest "point man" ever? I mean the youngest point achiever? If so, nice record...

Edit: ok, someone else mentioned it already...

Not gonna hold a grudge against Kvyat for having taken Felix da Costa's place - he was really quite impressive. 10th and finishing that close to Vergne is an excellent result for your debut race at the age of 19. Yes I did say I thought this chance was gonna come too soon for Kvyat, and at a risk of runing his career, looks like they were right though and he's ready to start getting some F1 experience.

It's almost never too young. If you are even 18 and make your debut in a perfect car with a "perfect" no.2 teammate you can win the WDC "despite" being 18...

Good weekend from both drivers. Especially impressed by Kvyat considering his lack of experience.

I don't know what to expect, but I have the impression Vergne future lies in him clearly estabilishing himself over Kvyat, despite the new rules being an equalizer.

It was great debut from him.

Kvyat scores again. Given his age and relative step up to F1, he's even more impressive than Magnussen IMO.

Vergne was quicker till he was in race. Why he retired?

Kvjat again in points, very good.

Daniil, awesomely in the points again!

Vergne got hijacked and then penalized unfairly to boot.  Let us hope that is reversed upon review.

I was impressed by Kvyat dodging Kobayashi last-minute, that took some skill and shows his qualifying mishap was probably a one-off. Good performance by him, too bad about JEV.

Have to say that Kvyat has been pretty impressive. I feel a bit sorry for JEV wrt his weight situation but he is certainly going to have a hell of a fight to keep his spot.

I've just watched the race again. On the first lap on the exit of turn 8 you can just see in the background a Lotus swerve left into what must have been JEV.

JEV has had quite a rough start to the season and not all his fault but I feel his career now is dependant on Ricciardo, and Ricciardo seems to be doing a good job.

Kvyat has been solid so far and kept it clean. Quite surprised to see he had the edge on JEV all weekend.

Vergne will be struggling to stay in F1 beyond this year if he is getting shown up by a 19-year-old.

However, perspective shows us that perhaps Vergne isn't really "bad" or uncompetitive, because quite often he was racing close with Ricciardo and now Ricciardo is going very well in Red Bull. But nonetheless despite not being "bad" it sounds like curtains for JEV's F1 career.

Actually, if things continue like this, RBR doesn't need Vergne and might as well take a new Kvyat'ish gamble and put a new driver in his seat. If things continue like how they're going, I don't think Vergne will finish the season.

From whom?  Sounds like something made up around a dinner table.  We are only 4 races in.

But Daniil is doing a kick butt job.  Another points finish today.  He is making fewer rookie errors too - a quick study.  You have to expect he'll still be a time in coming along, but so far, he is impressive.

Rumors, but I don't think Sainz is ready at the moment. Give Kvyat 1 full season's experience at least, before pairing him with another rookie.

BTW, I'm gaining confidence race after race in Kvyat. He's joined F1 at that young age in which ALO, RAI, VET, BUT, HAM did and he's doing as well as they did in heir debut seasons so far. I sincerely think this guy could go on to become a champion at Red Bull and usurp Vettel, or Ricciardo if he already beats Vettel.

So Felix da Costa is completely out of the picture then?

Red Bull would do better to poach Vandoorne and put him in there. Not convinced by Sainz personally.

Despite his talk about improving his psychology over the break JEV is still suffering from the same old issues at STR - poor starts, high tyre wear and a few too many incidents. I see why RBR may lose patience.

As for China:
https://secure-playe...videoId=1058881

11 min 45 s - Lap 21: Kvyat overtakes (6 laps old primes) Button (13 laps old primes)
I don't know how well the radio is synchronized with the video, but I am impressed with his confidence in overtaking. He is judging he can do it, planning well ahead where to do it, executes very clean pass, much later braking, everything under control, no lock-up, hits the apex, move done.

And then we have Vergne on softer tyres struggling to make the same move and losing time.

As in general this season:
Vergne is a true wet qualifying specialist. He has beaten Ricciardo only 4 times on Saturday last year. And 3 of those were wet conditions - Melbourne, Montreal and Spa. Therefore I am not actually surprised he has beaten Kvyat on those 3 wet qualifyings this season. And in the race it doesn't really like there is much between these two.

Overall, go Kvyat

Yep. DTM drive, gets to wear the logo, and sure gets some RB money but that's about it. He won't be in F1.

Sainz Jr impressed in the first round of 3.5. Really needed that after his abysmal GP3 season

Danil has been doing a brilliant job and so far is leading the 'Rookie of the Year' title in my book.  Apparently JEV is at a slight disadvantage to Danil being 8kg heavier, with the STR right on the weight limit.  The 8kg is supposed to be worth over two tenths per lap.

Does this mean that Kvyat+car is around 691kg and JEV+car is 8kg heavier because if 8kg is only difference in ballast time penalty should be smaller(at least it used to be so)?
