First victims of Brake-by-wire?

Kobayashi apologised for hitting Massa on cold tyres. After all, Japanese grow up being taught to apologise for everything, even if it was out of their control (See Japanese motoring law for details )

 

However, Kobayashi made a few telling comments. He said that he braked, nothing happened, then he braked more and nothing happened, then he braked more and the wheels locked as the tyres were cold. To me, this is a clear indication of a brake-by-wire failure.

 

Does anyone remember the early Prius accidents caused by BBW failure?

Do remember, BBW is *always* paired with anti-lock brakes in road-cars for safety reasons. In road-cars, if ABS fails, energy recovery is disabled - again for safety reasons.

 

What do you all think?

Is BBW a safety issue? (I think it is)

Does ABS need to be re-introduced in F1 to make the new power systems safe to race?

If you dont qualify at the front you're in big danger of getting hit by one of those teams with faulty breaks I agree

If your starting in front of another car then it's always a danger. There's no rule that says the car in 2nd won't have the issue.

Kobayashi always had a bit of a rep for being crash happy though didn't he?

 

Whatever happened it was very unfortunate for Massa and his anger is understandable.

I think the margin for error with the BBW and no ABS is just too narrow to be safe. Sad to say, it will need a very serious, perhaps fatal, incident before the FIA will even investigate the possibility they got it wrong.

Absolute NO to ABS. It will completely kill the excitement 100%.

 

It's up to the teams to make sure they can get the car to brake for the first corner, if they see something on the formation lap they must warn the driver and preferably retire on the spot.

Also of concern is the way the new nose setup lifted the car in front up and over the caterham, could be very dangerous.

Engine and regenerative braking, assisted by complex electronics, have no place in racing. Even more in F1.

Why not? A technical challenge for the teams. Isn't that what people wanted?

Agreed! F1 with 3L Turbo V12 engines , drum brakes, skinny wet-tread tyres, and no wings definitely won't work in 2014.

 

It does seem fans want more technology, but that means the old restrictions need lifting to keep tech that was meant to work together, together in the same package. Currently F1 is all about FIA 'Green-Group-Think' and 'Investor-Cash-Grab' - the basics of engineering have been forgotten at that level. At one time F1 advances led to road-car improvements, now road-cars lead. The 'brave-new-world' of the current power-plants is actually a rehash of 70s tech with better materials. There is only one piece of technology on the current F1 cars that was not already old forty five years ago - the eTurbo is only twenty-five years old.

 

BBW is essential for regenerative braking. ABS is essential for BBW. It's all or nothing.

IMO, it would be OK/good enough if ABS has a delayed reaction, only after wheels are locked for at least 0.3 seconds.
