Fuel Flow Rate effect on laptimes

As per Toto Wolff, if they hadn't turned down their FF rate, they would have been 5/10th faster.

 

I assume he is referring to the fact that they turned down FF rate to 96 kg/hr to ensure it never spiked over 100

 

 

Does it make such a big difference ?

Races go for approx 1.5h. The fuel flow limit is 100kg/h with a total limit of 100kg. Therefore they are managing fuel the whole race, and what Toto is saying is that they were losing 0.5s/lap on max engine setting. Using max engine setting must be compensated for at a different stage, therefore the total race time is not affected at all if track position is not a factor.
