I'm delighted to announce that Richard Armstrong will, from now-on, be co-moderating the 'Historical Research' forum.

As a replacement for the sad loss of David McKinney, Richard is under no illusions as to how big the boots are he needs to fill. That said, he is the ideal candidate - and was also recommended as such by others.

Here's to the continuation of David's ideal; and done so in in his memory.

Thank you, Stuart, for letting us know. My sincere congratulations to Richard!

I'm pretty confident that Richard is the right man for this responsible role, with spearheading of whom TNF's historical research will continue its further active and in-depth development!

First of all, I'd like to thank Stuart for giving me the opportunity to carry on the work David started and also those members who - on their own initiative (you know who you are!) - suggested my name as David's replacement. The Historical Research forum has not yet achieved what David hoped for and it would surely be a fitting memorial to him that it should become a really useful resource for researchers into motor sport history. I have some plans in that direction, but there are other priorities to deal with first!

David's health problems meant that he could not devote as much time or effort as he might have liked to the forum in recent months, so my first priority will be some 'housekeeping' to move appropriate threads which have been started or revived in the main forum. This may also involve the removal of some 'fluff' posts from some of those threads   ;) I'm not sure how - or if - that will effect thread subscriptions, so I would appreciate feedback on that.

For any threads started or reactivated in the main forum since December 1st 2013 which have been moved to Historical Research I shall send a PM to the thread starter or the person who revived it. Older threads will be moved without notifications being sent, but from now on I hope to be able to stay on top of this and to move appropriate threads within 48 hours of them being started or reactivated from the archive - in which cases I shall again send a PM to the thread starter or the person who has restarted an old thread (and perhaps to other posters).

[edit: Subsequent to Allen Brown's comments below, I shall send PMs to anyone whose name appears in the list of people following a topic.]

For that reason, I would like to urge you all to check your PM notification options. If you normally log in to read the forum, then you can set the system to show new PMs as a popup when you log in. If you don't have this enabled already you can do so by clicking on your user name at the top right of the screen. Select 'My Settings' and then 'Notification Options' from the options on the left and on the page that appears, make sure that there is a tick in the box next to 'Show inline pop-up when I have new personal messages'. If you prefer just to be notified by email, see below. Before leaving the page, click on 'Save changes'.

If you don't usually log in or prefer email notifications, then you should make sure that the email boxes (at least) are ticked for the other three options under Personal Messages - always assuming that the email address Autosport has is the one you actually use! This will ensure that a copy of the PM is sent to your email address. Before leaving the page, click on 'Save changes'.

To check that Autosport has your correct email, select 'Email & password' on the My Settings page. Your current email will be displayed. If it needs to be changed, you will find instructions there on how to do it.

I fully agree - the right man for the job, and I'm confident that Richard will achieve his goals, and with it David's ambition! Let's all give him the support he and the project deserve.

An excellent choice.

Richard - I presume you are aware that if a thread starts on one forum and somebody subscribes to it, that subscription appears to be lost if the thread is then moved.  I am not sure that is still an issue but it has previously caused me to stop receiving updates on some threads.

My way of working is that I have subscribed to both forums so I see all new threads being started and then I subscribe to the ones that look interesting.  I used to check the forum every day but now I simply don't have the time so rely on my subscriptions to keep me up to date.

You will have my support as well of course in your new role.  If I can help you at all, please don't hesitate to ask.

Allen - I had seen your previous comments and that is precisely why I mentioned PMs! I'm still finding my way round the moderator tools, but I have just noticed that it is possible to get a list of people who are following a thread - I see you're following this one :) - so I shall try to make sure I PM everyone who has subscribed to any moved threads.

An excellent choice - Richard is an enthusiastic, positive, well respected member of TNF who has been here long enough to appreciate the differing tangents this fora takes and has the respect of a wide range of contributors here.

It will be good if HR provides the kind of reference tool that David had hoped for.

Congratulations to Speedy...

A reward for the work you've done in the past. And a licence to keep on working hard!

I think the housekeeping ideas are good as at the moment we have to look in both places all the time and it's a bit hard to know where to post, at least from the 'research' point of view. Another thingis that topics sometimes wander off in different directions, which is good, but sometimes maybe admin could take the initiative and start a new thread?

Meanwhile, congratulations , Richard

Thanks for all the positive comments. I'm working my way through the threads to be moved - which I shall probably do over the coming weekend - but if any of you have requests for currently active (not archived) threads which you would like moved to HR, please PM me with either the thread title or - preferably - a link (to get the link, either right-click on the thread title in the index page and select 'copy link location' (or similar) or open the thread and copy the text in the address box on your browser).
