Not really big news. Starting from 2000, only F1 World Champion not nominated has been Jenson Button. Schumacher won it twice.

I believe he could have a chance of winning it this year as 2013 was close to perfect, but as always the competition is extremely tough.

Interesting that the awards are being held in KL, means some of the F1 people get to attend, I noticed on twitter that Nico Hulkenberg said he is going.

Yes he is, in the breakthrough category.

Obviously i'm rooting for Seb. It's ten years since Michael won so i think it's time for a F1 driver. He's in tough competition, but looking at similar awards already given for 2013 he has a good chance!

That's only a press photo from before the event, but... yeah, coincidentally it's just been announced that he has won. And breakthrough of the year went to Marc Marquez, so a good awards quota for motorsport.

I always liked the kid but became a true Vettel fan in 2013 for his many, many outstanding drives. The last time I saw someone pull what he did at Singapore was at least 10 years ago with Schumacher. That race at Germany was something else. And despite all the post race shenanigans (lets not go there), I thought those 3 or 4 laps fighting with Webber at the Malaysian GP a year ago is something ill never forget. A lot of frustration came out, car going sideways and he nearly lost it a few times, while Horner and others cried over the radio to stop doing that...priceless. The speed of Senna and the brains of Prost.

I always liked the kid but became a true Vettel fan in 2013 for his many, many outstanding drives. 

I went from somewhat of a Vettel cynic, to a Vettel admirer in 2013. I also changed my personal opinion on him from indifference to quite liking him. I also think he is a decent enough figurehead for F1.

 

Regardless, I am glad he won, as it is good for F1 and Motorsport in general

13 wins in a season wasn't funny at all. Then there's the matter of 9 in a row in a season. Clearly he achieved a lot last year... surely the sound thumping he delivered to his opposition must have been a factor.

In my opinion, Seb's 2013 deserves this award based on 3 key factors

 

- His teammate never finished ahead of him in a 2 car finish

 

- He made very few mistakes on track 

 

- He scored meaningful points when his car was not the best (see Spain and Oz). Which further underlined his vast array of talents (and dismissed the myth that he is just a front runner)

SEb made no mistakes  , and drove the best , but I just think F1 s too dependent on equipment to be successful. When was the last time you saw a driver in a backmaker car be nominated , no matter how good he drove ?  Seb and Marc did well , but I just think it's 'whoever wins the most should be the nominated driver' because of ignorance to the differences between the cars/bikes. Don't get me wrong , Seb and Marc did the best job , but I don't think this sport is suited to awards like these.

Yes, we know he had the car to do that and he beat Mark on and outside the track. It's cool to do that for the record books but how much is of an accomplishment when you don't have real adversaries. I don't think anyone considers Schumacher one of the greatest because of 2002 or 2004..

Congratulations Sebastian on a well deserved win!!!

He gave a great speech - it is great that the winners are considering the kids looking up to them.  It was a very challenging group again this year, so big Kudos to Seb for taking World Sportsman of the Year!  An honor reserved for the very best of champions and he deserves to be among them

 

Congrats to MM93 also!  Great breakthrough choice!  That kid is definitely on his way.

I mean, Marquez beating the likes of Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Rossi. Vettel in a field with Alonso, Webber, Rosberg, Hamilton. They are not exactly 2nd rate competitors.

You keep harping on about the times he had a capable car mate... but make very little mention of the fact that he was leading the championship early in the year, even when Ferrari and Lotus had the RBR beat for pace. I don't think in F1 you can win a championship without having a car which is top 2-3 (or any other form of motorsport). I also don't see many people go... "oh Fangio, he had best equipment most of the times, so no surprise he won 5 WDC's." So when i see people do that to Vettel, of course it raises some flags. Must be insecurity about whatever that boils up everytime he does well. Now, this year, how many are complaining that Mercedes drivers are likely to win this with aplomb. No one is seemingly saying, "it is just down to car and so doesn't count"? So yes, questions do arise about motivations of some people...

 

I positively know of some who'd rate the same performances by Schumacher and Vettel better if they were driving for British teams... take it for what it is worth.

Where did I say it doesn't count? He was in the right place at the right moment and he's a top driver. F1 has always been like that. My point was his performance through the season is not deserving of an award as the best sportman of the world, not when he had such superior machinery, not when he didn't have to really push to win most of his GPs, not when there are lot of others being the best in their sports on equal terms. But, as already proved he didn't win the award for 2013 so... And yes, if Merces is as dominant as was in Australia for the rest of the season and Lewis wins it I'd say the same. Even more, as I always say I'd be very happy if Alonso could win another couple of titles without having to be at the limit each turn each session, I wouldn't mind people saying it was easy. I don't understand why Vettel fans take it so bad instead of just enjoying Sebastian success.

Nice to see Vettel get some acknowledgement that matters. Reading this forum you should think that he lucked in to 4 consecutive WDC.

 

What Marc Marquez achieved in 2013 was truely amazing. I think it even warrants the main Laureus award. 

 

In a sport where being a rookie is so difficult, he managed (Casey Stoner aside) to beat the 3 other guys, who had won every single dry race bar one (Ben Spies, Assen 2011) since 2007! Riding on very equal equipment as the main competitors.

anyway, congrats to Vettel on yet another award. his speech was a bit awkward (an unusual trait), though you could say he set the bar high with his other ones.

I thought the speech was great. Obviously he was not up to his usual shenanigans, but i can forgive him for wanting to take it a bit easy/being nervous having that kind of crowd.

I'm not saying they're 2nd rate competitors , I'm saying it's a lot easier to judge Rafa Nadal against Mo Farah than it is to compare him to Vettel or Marquez. Why ? Because Seb (nor any other driver) would have won in , let's say a Mclaren.  It's just much harder to judge. We can't evn decide on the best driver each year  , never mind compare them to other sportsmen. Not trying to diminish Vettel or Marquez , if there was 2 driver/riders to win it this year , they'd be the 2 , but I just think it's too hard to compare F1 drivers to other athletes.
