But of course, there is no way that FIA will ever consider these. It would make waaay too much sense.

Just as a sidenote... That wouldn't change a thing, they are not close to the 15K RPM limit atm. Raising it to 20 wouldn't help

In reference to keeping the 100kg fuel limit and lifting the 100kg/h flow limit.

Honestly I think the races could become too difficult for spectators to track.

 

You would have HUGE performance differentials if you opened up the fuel flow limitations (according to engineers), so you'd end up with DRS-esque activity all around the lap in all weathers regardless of position. That might be more "pure" but it would make for horrible viewing I think. Qualifying would be hilarious though...

 

The 100kg limit and 100kg/h flow were very much a stab in the dark for the FIA I guess this year (though bench dyno testing would have helped), but I think they've done a fair job. We're not hearing about excessive fuel saving and the car pace isn't too shoddy (Spain excluded for grip/tyre choice reasons imo - as proved by this test).

 

The power delivery of these engines is just different, regardless of the fuel flow - so I think we can forget about 15-20k rev limits for the forseeable future. If people want noise, it needs to come somewhere else - but I think a few more tweaks to FOM coverage is all we need, these cars sound great - they sound current.

We managed in the past.

 

I'm all for binning the FFL, let them use the allowance any way they like, but that's got nothing to do with the sound, just that I think it could lead to better racing. I think it would be great to see drivers running truly different strategies again. You can end up with a spread of cars mid-race, but with the front runners coming together towards the end with the added excitement as to who has saved enough to push for the line. It will be fine if some mis-calculate and run out on the way.

Where did you find the info about the McLaren drivers? I was really hoping Jenson would be in the car, considering he's only done one day of in-season testing so far and it's his home track....

The only other info I have found online is the Caterham line-up: Will Stevens on Tuesday and Rio Haryanto on Wednesday.

They are resting Kimi he had a massive shunt on Sunday, must still be sore, Bianchi is under contract to Ferrari, AFAIK he is still a test driver of theirs, they placed him at Marussia to get race experience

Is it just me who thinks £30 is crazy money for a test day?

I'm sure many moons ago (early 2000s) it was free then went up to a tenner which wasn't too bad but it's now £30 and that's a lot. Was thinking about popping down for a few hours after work because I'm interested in hearing the sound of the cars so I can form my own opinion but not sure it's worth it...

£30 is about the limit for me - the European tests are no more than a few Euros to attend, if not free.

 

2007 was the first time they started charging - also the first time I attended. 2008 was in the region of £12-15 IIRC. I've not been back since then because of the testing ban.

 

It would be nice if they opened more of the circuit up considering the ticket price - it's Vale through to Abbey this time.

I guess they have to cover the cost of getting in staff which are needed when opening the track to the public.

I know there are those who think Hulkenberg will end up at Ferrari, but the 'Ferrari Acadamy' has to bear fruit soon, and bianchi may be the justification for it. He'd be cheap too, if they end up paying raikkonen AGAIN to not race...

Perhaps they'll soon realise it may be better to get a passionate young-gun with something to prove in the car, rather than a demotivated guy banking the cash pre-retirement in the twilight of his career.

I think it's quite telling that Bianchi is getting the nod rather that DeLaRosa or Alonso... Surely they'd rather have Alonso in the actual car than in the simulator unless they had decided to evaluate something other than parts on the car...

PdlR is driving on Tuesday. Logistically putting Bianchi in is probably the simplest solution. Nobody's plans have to be changed. Ferrari simply tell Marussia to move Bianchi's test day to Tuesday and put him in the Ferrari for Wednesday. I don't think the situation needs to be complicated, it is the simplest, easiest solution.

It used to be free, so I think that cost is covered by whatever fee is charged for hosting the test.

I did see that actually. Anyone on here ever paid the extra? Videos on YouTube from last year's YDT at Silverstone look to me as if they just wheel out old cars while the mechanics do their work behind screens/garage doors. Is there an autograph session or anything as part of it?

Its like being back in Jerez - lots of grinding/drilling noise from the Red Bull garage. Otherwise all quiet at the moment with the odd team firing up their engines. All the barriers are up in front of the garages as usual for testing.

Test drivers can't ask for numbers, they are assigned to them by the FIA, at least that's what Giedo van der Garde had to say about it.

Has PDLR gone through the process of choosing that number officially or is it just something they have put on the car for the test? I know it is a number which has appeared on many Ferrari's in the past.

 

Wonder what number Bianchi will run tomorrow... his official #17 or something else?

The patern is clear, the FIA reserves numbers based upon the resulsts of the 2013 constructors championship and the number of drivers a team intends to test, if they gather aditional ones in the season I guess they can get back in line behind Caterham. You've also keep in mind some numbers are taken by actual drivers with an F1 seat so they keep changing up.
