Now for some awards!
Driver of the day: Mike Conway. Stayed out of trouble and fended off Power for brilliant win.
Numpties of the day: R.H-R and Newgarden. Incident that could have been avoided took out a lot of the runners.
The Mark Webber bad day award: Sebastien Bourdais. Not only ending up in the barrier once but twice on a day when he could have won.
Moment of the day award: The pileup. A ton of people out in one go and arguments that will probably rumble on for ages.
Comeback award: Simon Pagenaud. Coming back from being punted to finish in as high he did was superb.

Damn good race. And PT in the booth to top it off!! T Bell is a great colour man as well
Kind of sad though when Indycars sound better than F1 cars....

Seeing a great race is always the antidote of a boring and blues-ish Sunday evenin', makes you happy when waking up Monday. Keeps the wits sharp.
And as always, laughter has been had with you lot.

Fantastic racing. When they were doing the field run-down and got to 11th-place Conway and the reporter said he's looking to join Al Jr, Alex Zanardi etc as a multiple Long Beach winner, I said out loud to the screen "What a stupid comment. He's not going to win today."
The trickster gods who preside over Indycars saw it fit to prove me wrong. Hooray for them!
Fun thread too. The CART days are come again.

One negative that I see going forward is the re-introduction of the rule about closing the pits when the yellow comes out. Yes, that rule is good for randomly shuffling up the order, but it's really bad for the race's credibility. I hate it when it happens on NASCAR road courses, and I hated it when it used to constantly ruin the races of the front-runners in Indycars. If Indycar is really that concerned about safety, they can introduce the delta time system that is used in F1.

An "interesting" race. Congrats to Conway, the most deserving winner after RHR decided to clear out the top 3. Always nice to see one of the smaller teams win. Not really blaming Ryan though. If Power's move is deemed legal, I guess anything goes. RHR's pass attempt was much closer than Will's, to being legit.

My assorted thoughts on the race, not worth the paper they are printed on:
- The national anthem was not as bad as I feared it would be. She looked relieved when she finished.
- For those that doubt RHR was at fault, even Michael Andretti said he could have been more patient. It looks to me like him and Little Al have the same diet.
- Quite a win by a little guy team, Conway did a great job. I would have preferred, however, for Newgarden to be the winning little guy team driver. It was a amazing when he came out in front of Ryan Hunter Get Out of My Reay.
- I was gutted for Sebastian's multiple tire barrier meetings.

Ryan Hunter Get Out of My Reay.
moniker of the race
PS.. Cacarella has politely refused the honor of 'Bama thread starter...so it falls back to Afterburner if he so desires.

Sure beats Ryan Punter Reay.
Really made a mess of that race and I'm sorry. But we have a very fast car and I won't make mistakes everytime !

Watching the crash replay again, why did Wilson restart second? Power and Conway got past the accident before he did. I guess Conway jumped Power on the restart?
the three that crashed had just pitted...
i think Dixon and WIlson were ahead of the crash on the road

Well, what a race.
That race up front was shaping up real nice before RHR's desperate lunge obliterated everything. Gutted for Newgarden & Fisher.
How Willy P didn't get a penalty for savaging Pag, I do not know. That was worse, imho, than Grahal's forklift of Wilson.
Delighted for Conway, even more so for Ed as he took a brave decision to step down from road courses. Fuzzy's in Victory Lane at Long Beach, they have to be pleased with that!
Special mention: Marco Andretti - He looked horrendous all race. Standard.

Conway got Power on the outside of T1, but the commentary team had more important things to be talking about than the action on screen.

This. Again the commentators seem only half away of what's going on. They always seem surprised when someone on an alternative strategy is where they're expected to be.

In fairness, Pagenaud's dropping back was not at all his fault. Power's move was sloppy, half-hearted and fully warranted a penalty; that he didn't get one was a travesty. As for Bourdais, well... what can you say? If you're going to have a race that implodes, you might as well make it implode really badly!
Overall, I thought this was an entertaining - albeit at times frustrating - race. I'm intensely happy that Power didn't win, he truly didn't deserve it after punting Pagenaud off, and it's always nice to see a smaller team win a race. I still find it hilarious that Pagenaud managed to find his way back into the top 5: it's these sorts of recovery drives that will keep him in the title hunt. I still think Pagenaud would have won this race if it weren't for Power's stupidity, but a top 5 finish is still very strong regardless.
Gutted for Newgarden, he deserved better. If Hunter-Reay had been a bit more patient I think we would have seen a truly epic battle for victory there.
Edit: A look at the championship table shows that Power leads from Conway from Pagenaud from Castroneves from Hunter-Reay.

I can understand RHR's impatience with Power bearing down on the Andretti boys, but that turn is not the place to try a move at Long Beach. He only had to wait one more corner. I've seen moves into the next one, which has more space. If not there's the straight after that.

Not sure, but it could be related to his petulant nature when things don't go his way. However, contrary to today, it hardly ever goes his way so it's not based on his runaway success.
So it's at least partially based on him being a petulant whiny child to... Sebastian Bourdais out of all people. Anyone see a tiny bit of irony?

Maybe it was Huertas squeaking through, I was confusing him and Wilson the entire race, despite Wilson's car having enough blue to be visually different.

best INdycar race ... for a while.
it seems Will Power has the Power to sway the Will of the stewards.
kudos to track marshals .... they are a damn side faster than F1 monkeys ... keep Charlie whitting out of IndyCar,
gutted for bourdais and pagenaud ... happy for Conway and Munoz.
Long beach should have F1 back ... track is good.
now we go from the sunny californaian beach to the dreary smog filled desolate ruins that is 'Shanghai circuit' to watch the same 2 guys fighting for the win ...
sometimes it's not so good to be a F1 fan

Got back and watched the race on DVR, paul Tracy did a great job I thought, too bad he's only doing 6 races.
Will Power is building up some horrible karma. Two races in a row with boneheaded moves, sheesh.
That RHR 'move' was pure idiocy.
Dunno what they put in the water at the indycar pits, but it's having a detrimental effect on some of these guys mental processes...

This killed me with laughter when I saw it. Seriously. That was the other Carlos.
Is that an insult? 'Cause if it is, you missed him at Belle Isle last year, where if he wasn't leading the race(s), he was whipping through the field like a freakin' tornado... until a slow puncture stopped him... and he very nearly came back from that, too.Is this the same Conway who's wealth paid for all his rides in lower formula?

One of the races that made me a Conway fan. Also a good example of what most good Indy races are like--the last few laps are awesome.

As if Conway's wealth separates him from his peers. They're hardly paupers themselves......
His results speak for themselves. The kid is alright.

getting ready to go out this morning, telly on to the movie "fled".
in the middle of getting one of the "good" guys away from one of the bad guys, one of the bad guys--latino--says "hijo de la puta!!"
so it guess that settles that once and for all.
