I cannot remember when or where I took this or of whom it is.  Probably early 70s maybe Brands or Silverstone. I know someone on this forum will know, thanks.tires_zpse2e4bc0c.jpgno56_zps9e0a1390.jpg

It's a McLaren, not a BRM - The helmet is Peter Revson's, and it was taken at the Brands Hatch Race of Champions in 1972.

The use of the #56 is unusual, and helps identify the event.

It's the 1972 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch. Peter Revson is in the McLaren, with Tim Schenken following him in the first photo.

Kento, there are BRMs in the pictures, but the Yardley sponsorship moved from BRM to McLaren over the winter of 1971/2. BRM were sponsored by Marlboro in 1972 and I think that's the Beltoise car in both pictures, followed by Ronnie Peterson's March.

And some F5000s in the back of the 2nd pic. A Lola T300 and the Surtees TS11 maybe? Great variety of shapes, wonderful!

The car immediately above Revson's McLaren in the first picture, roughly at the apex of Druids, is the March 721X of Ronnie Peterson. I think the car behind Peterson is another BRM P160.

Is that Alan Rollinson in the T300?

I was there but I can't remember!

The #60 car in the first picture is Tim Schenken's Surtees TS9.

The #33 car is Teddy Pilette in the VDS McLaren M18.

I think you are right, it definitely is Ronnie's 721X, sandwiched between the BRMs of Beltoise and Ganley. But those BRMs are quite blurred, so a lap chart is probably needed to say for sure which is which.

I'd assume the first picture was taken before the second, as Revson was fifth on the grid, but finished eight, having lost positions to Schenken, Beltoise and Ganley during the race. I'd also assume the rear wheel on the left of the second picture belongs to Schenken's Surtees. And I'd assume the pictures are from the opening laps, as the field is quite close - perhaps the first picture is from the opening lap, and the second is from the second lap? And finally I'm pretty sure the location is the exit of Druids.

We’re now only missing one, I think.

First photo: Revson (M19A), Schenken (TS9B), Beltoise (P160), Peterson (721X) and Ganley (P160)

Second photo: Revson, Beltoise, Peterson’s front wheel, Rollinson (T300), ??, Pilette (M18) and van Lennep (TS11).

My guess for ?? would be Stommelen in the Eifelland March.

And the only T300 in the 1972 championship, disappointingly.  Also reckon that's Stommelen's Eifelland.

Where are Redman (McLaren M10B) and McRae (Leda LT27) I wonder?  Behind Ganley and ahead of Rollinson perhaps?

Posting on here proves to me what a casual fan of F-1 I really am and how senility is setting in, thank you for your imput gentlemen. My first F-1 race was 1964 Aimtree 200.

I think you're right about Redman as the Autosport report says he led Rollinson in the early laps. McRae wasn't there, though. He chose not to take part in the main race as a protest, having had his win in the F5000 race taken away for overtaking under a yellow flag.

Thanks Tim.  Just been looking things up and he didn't race in the combined F1/F5000 Int'l Trophy at Silverstone or the final "proper" Gold Cup at Oulton Park either.  Always remember the latter where Redman was in amongst the F1 cars with the new B24 of course.

Happy days.

I just looked at the race results again,

http://www.ultimater...hp?raceid=18177

Did the organizers assign numbers based on car category?

It looks like all the F5000 cars have the lower numbers (Teddy Pillette is highest-numbered, #33),

while the F1 cars are all numbered 51 and higher.

It was the same weekend as a regular F5000 championship race, so presumably the organizers just had the F5k boys keep their regular numbers from the day before and re-start the F1 numbers from 51 up.

Not the Race of Champions, but here's the 1972 British GP at Brands Hatch:

If my memory serves me well Motoring News reported that the yellow flag had been displayed because of oil on the circuit, the RAC having in their infinite wisdom decided to do away with the oil flag. Cassius argued that use of the yellow flag was inappropriate but not surprisingly the Clerk threw the book at him. The oil flag was soon reintroduced and we are still using it to this day.

I was 12,000 miles away at the time and read the race report about 4 months later. Perhaps those who were there have another version of the story.

Indeed, Mark. Although David Hobbs was entered for the Brands race the day before in a Hogan Racing T300 which never materialised. I don't know if he was entered for the RoC but no doubt someone here will be able to tell us.

An attempted pre-cursor (if that makes sense) to what happened the following season, when the Hogan Lolas (T330s by then) did the Mallory and Silverstone rounds, finishing one-two in the latter.

Were there any other Stateside-bound F5000 cars that did early UK rounds?

Bob Brown's B24 Mark. Team mate of Tony D, in the AAR Team. Bit odd that wasn't it....?

I literally bumped into one of the Yardley cars in Boots (the chemist) in Market Street, Manchester, probably the year after these shots were taken. There was some sort of after-shave promotion going on (no interest to me, apart from the girlies with amazingly long legs and hot-pants... I was more interested in the fact that it was a real car, with all the correct mech bits, rather than a mock-up with wooden engine).  :)

I think you may be correct - the Eifelland ran with a full width nose early in the season not unlike the Surtees TS11.

Pete, I am sure we covered this once before but it was Lewis's I think.

I do know I got Jackie Oliver's autograph anyway!

Mmmm.  Probably the less said the better, Dan!

He was ill and stayed in the States if I recall correctly.  The car was then raced at Oulton Park by Peter Gethin, who had started the season in the US-bound Doug Shierson Marathon B24, winning the first race at Brands. This, however was the following season, 1973 of course. So, I have answered my own question at least in part.  Odd what you remember from so far back.

Definitely Boots in my case- maybe they had all the team cars along Market Street?
