Meanwhile, it appears Red Bull is not ready to forgive rival Mercedes, after the German team called on the reigning world champions to be banned for three races for appealing Daniel Ricciardo's Melbourne disqualification.

Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda on Saturday made a peace-offering in the form of a Sachertorte, a famous recipe of Vienna chocolate cake.

But Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko told Bild: "He thinks everything is over with a cake.

"I think the next time he wants to eat with us, he should put on a bulletproof vest."

Is this accurate?

Hilarious Austrian humour, I suppose.

Marko's mock indignation is laughable. Perhaps for his next career he aspires to be a beerhall comedian.

Red Bull have taken over Ferrari's mantle of being simulaneously the biggest rule-breakers and the biggest whingers. Marko would more profitably spend his time trying to sort out Sebastian Vettel.

:p sorry to disappoint you but Austria isn't germanic... in bronze age... everything from southern germany downwards till Rome had gallic tribes living there...

I was thinking more along the lines of a beer hall putsch in Marko's case...

I suspect that the term was being used with the modern meaning of simply ethnic groups that speak German. According to wikipedia:

In modern times the term occasionally has been used to refer to ethnic groups who speak a Germanic language and claim ancestral and cultural connections to ancient Germanic peoples.[3] Within this context, modern Germanic peoples include the Norwegians, Swedes, Danes, Icelanders, Germans, Austrians, English, Dutch, Afrikaners, Flemish, Frisians and others.

Trying to get a 3 race ban was the sign of a desperate team.

And a team with a car that is as good as the Merc right now.. shouldn't need to be so desperate.

Maybe once they pop their cherry, they can relax a bit.

It was clear Merc were motivated by self interest.  If you can't see that, you're blind.

It was always 50/50 for me, if Dan would get his points back.. I tried to stay out of the topic because it was endless talking around in circles, especially by those who would love any excuse to dig the knife in, out of jealousy bitterness, or whatever else.

3 race ban?  WTF, where did that come from?  Why was it Merc and not someone else?  Pretty obvious.  They underestimate their own ability to win this years championship the old fashioned way.  Dan could get his points back, and they'll still win it.  No need for desperate tactics.

Sin, I have an important question. Have you or anyone you know ever tried this kind of cake? Is it tasty?. In America the idea of giving someone a fruit cake can kind of be insulting, because that junk is nasty as hell.

Too bad Ferrari missed the opportunity to replace SD with Gerhard Berger.  We could've had the top 3 teams run by Austrian dicks with peculiar sense of humor.

Dr Marko should know that Nikki does not need a bullet proof vest.  The guy has proved that nothing can kill him

Lies, they asked for 3 suspended race bans, big difference that little word means.

Since when is Sachertorte considered to be a fruit cake? I don't know what you do in America with them but they're god damn delicious.

No idea what Yanks are doing with their fruit cakes, but they're as bad as German cakes. You could stone people with that stuff.

But a Sacher? A good Sacher should buy forgiveness for mass murder as far as I'm concerned.

No, I was wondering if this Austrian cake is very tasty and makes for a good gift. It sounds like it does. A fruitcake is something completely different and in the USA it gets a reputation of being a bad gift.

  Don't say things like that - people will believe you.

It is traditional to give fruit cake for Christmas and it is enjoyed by many older people for some reason.

But I am with SR388 - it is nasty as hell.

Last year tyretest-gate? Where RB asked for a 3 race ban for Merc. Got it back this time, u see?

I pay such little attention to these aspects of the sport (the petty bickering and politics), I didn't even remember that.  Still not sure it happened, but I'll take your word for it.  It sounds believable.

What most people on here don't realize is that they are all as bad as each other.  They are all playing the same game.

The only difference is where your bias lies, and what you want to happen.  Horner, Flavio, Ron, Luca and co.. are all as bad as each other..

The main difference is, RBR have had the most success in the last 5 years, which makes people more jealous and bitter against them.  I used to feel a similar way about Ferrari years ago.

These days I don't hate anyone, any team or driver.  Which is why I don't remember that tyretest gate from last season.. and rarely post in topics like this.

Or rarely even read them.............................. because F1 is a different sport, when you ignore all that stuff and just watch the qualifying and race each fortnight.

As with with may things in life, it's all a matter of taste of course. For me a good fruit cake is a delight - perfect with good tea - it can take one's mind off a boring race...!

I never had Sachertorte, it's an Austrian cake typical Vienna... of course I probably could get it here somewhere, but.... I'm not a fan of sweet things... :o I rather have a Döner

Sacher is not a fruit cake. It's predominantly chocolate cake, with a thin filler of jam. On the other hand, schwarzwaldtorte would made a nicer cake to throw around, sacher is too dry :D

I don't think either would bother being that passive aggressive given they're both struggling to get even 3rd in the WCC.

Lauda: "No thanks Helmut. I'm on a strict diet"
