heres a question, wtf happened to ricky stenhouse, seems like each week hes bumbling around laps down with danica :/

Yeah, getting lapped 3 times with that car can't make Roush very happy. Though being officially a 2-time Nationwide champ might create some expectations, they were won with the new points rules against minimal full-time eligible series competition

During the telecast I remember thinking the broadcasters seem to be talking up Gordon a lot this year (granted he retains points lead and has run consistently well)

Now, I must admit that I don't have full control on the new chase rules, but could we, potentially end up in a position where the points leader, isn't in the chase (due to not having a single win)?

I watched the replay today, between the MotoGP race and Indy. Shame, shame upon Kenseth, Keselowski and Gordon for letting that dick Logano win. Shame.

Should be posting the Talladega thread tonight (from my POV, so in about 10-12 hours).

I wasn't clear on this either, but basically if there are 15+ winning drivers this year, the final spot goes to the points leader.  So the points leader always gets the last spot.  If there are N drivers where N is less than 15 winning drivers then the top (16 - N) drivers in the points standings go through.

Eligibility for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup
The top 15 drivers with the most wins over the first 26 races will earn a spot in the Chase Grid -- provided they have finished in the top 30 in points and attempted to qualify for every race (except in rare instances). The 16th Chase position will go to the points leader after race No. 26, if he/she does not have victory. In the event that there are 16 or more different winners over 26 races, the only winless driver who can earn a Chase Grid spot would be the points leader after 26 races.

If there are fewer than 16 different winners in the first 26 races, the remaining Chase Grid positions will go to those winless drivers highest in points. If there are 16 or more different winners in the first 26 races, the ties will first be broken by number of wins, followed by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver points.

It's actually possible that the champ could be winless this year...IIRC winless Dale Jr would have won last year under this system. I'd laugh if this happened with Johnson winning another championship. Ironic, and underlining the flaws in the current points system that don't reward winners enough that the top 2 in total points have yet to win (JG, MK)

I'm not sure that's a sign that it doesn't reward winners enough.  Under this system, once you get a race win, you're free to throw caution to the wind and take risks to grab another one before the Chase.  Therefore, it's not surprising that the winners are not atop the standings, they have no need to be.
