Today it is exactly 20 years ago that the world lost a supreme motorracing talent: Ayrton Senna. I think that every motorsport fan still knows to this day where he was when he witnessed the events on that tragic day. He was arguably the most naturally gifted driver of his generation and he remains revered to this day, even among newer generations that never actually witnessed him race. His death made a profound impact on a hazardous sport, which had been no stranger to fatalities in the past. It is therefore even more remarkable that twenty years have passed without a single fatality, and I think that his legacy is two-fold: not only did he draw millions of people to an endeavour that was all about gifted and courageous men taming brutal machines, but also the fact that he had to pay the ultimate price for chasing his dream. We should always remember why he made Formula 1 such a spectacle for so many people, and at the same time we should remain vigilant, for his fatality will surely not be the last.

I remember where I was in '94 like it was yesterday, expecting him to climb out of the cockpit and after a while, gradually realising this wasn't another Berger/Piquet. Senna was an icon for my generation and it was great to experience it 'live' rather than via YouTube clips. Sadly, rather like my other F1 icon, Gilles Villeneuve, the focus always shifts to his death in 1994. For me, rather than remembering that final corner in Imola, I prefer to remember those days when his performances made you sit up and say 'wow'. To name but a few:

Monaco qualifying '88

Portugal '85

Donington '93

Silverstone '88

Monaco '92

Aida qualifying '94

Hello, this forum is for discussing current Racing Comments, so I'm closing this. However, The Nostalgia Forum has quite a few threads about Ayrton Senna's and Roland Ratzenberger's fatal crashes, I suggest having a nose around in there.
