I don't think contracts mean much at all to be honest... Raikkonen had one in 2010 and Ferrari paid him out. I think Mercedes might do the same if they feel Alonso is the man. The amount they spent on paying off a contract would be pocket change, after the amount they spent on these turbo engines.

yes, but Raikkönen's contract was an automatic one year extension based on 2008 performance clauses. Rosberg's is a freshly negotiated multi-year contract.

Can we close this now? Unless he settles for a test driver role, not much to discuss anymore.

Yes as 3rd driver and Sim driver.

2016 he takes over the 44 car renamed the 14 car and Lewis and 44 go back to Macca.

I think Merc is playing it safe at the moment. Extending Nico is a great team decision since it's highly unlikely that Nico will go publicly against the team. He's always a team player and knows which lines must not be crossed. As much as Alonso claims to have moved on from 2007, he has proven track record of being outspoken. Imagine how fasts things could go sour if Lewis would be teamed up with Alonso again. Why take that risk when you already have championship contender given great machinery. Nico was also proven that he's no slouch, sure he can't beat Lewis most of the times but he's always close enough to take advantage if anything were to go wrong.

It was never about Hamilton's seat.

Probably, but in F1, you never know. Actually, that's something I've been intrigued about. There does seem to be some friction between Lewis and the team. Not sure why, but it does seem to be there. If Lewis and Merc were on the verge of parting ways, who better to replace Lewis?

True, but I don't think contracts are as important as they are made to be right now... If Mercedes wants Alonso and he's willing to change then I think they wouldn't care. It would be a great marketing tool imo, enhancing their mantra of 'The Best or Nothing'

I was alluding to 'if' Alonso is the man Mercedes want, in regards to employing both drivers that are quite marketable within the Mercedes family.

This is on after today, What about Vettel to Mercedes in 2015, I can see it happen. If Mercedes and Lewis will cut their relationship, another top driver will collect his WDC, I am sure

Right now, Nico is as much a PR liability as Lewis, perhaps even more.

That is what you think, right now it seems the team backs Rosberg more than Lewis, regarding the Toto comments and the crystal ball. Don't know where you coming from. And the PR part, nobody really cares, except some users here

Huh, no. Mercedes will care. Mercedes is also a publicly listed company, so shareholders might care too.

Not sure that seeing a driver cheat his way to a win is how Mercedes likes to be seen winning.

Also, Toto/Lauda appear to be defending (not backing) Rosberg because destroying him would just make no sense, given he's just signed an extension.

If the rumours are true that Lewis used an unfair advantage to win the last race it didn't seem to bother them very much then, and btw, Nico was cleared of cheating.

And a driver whining on the radio, not following team order, refuses a handshake is not a PR disaster? If you look outside this forum Lewis gets criticized all the way for his behavior today, and nobody cares about yesterday. Your Problem is all these things really happened, and were judged by people outside of Lewis fan world. And Rosbergs' case is rated by a small minority as cheating. Because, guess what he was found not guilty. To think the position of Rosberg after today is worse than Lewis in the team, is beyond... I will keep my mouth shut. Rosberg was backed up by Lauda and Toto while Toto indirectly criticized Lewis today (crystal ball comment) and Lauda had the guts to tell the Spain story. Don't know what straw you clutching at, but the position of Rosberg seems at the moment far more settled than Lewis's at Mercedes.
