Partly inspired by the similar F1 thread (could you tell?), although something I have been curious about for a while anyway, do we know when the Indy 500 was first referred to by that name?
I would be grateful if someone with a subscription to a US newspaper archive site could do a quick search on the term and see what comes up.
1964 is the earliest oft-cited reference that I know of, and whilst a Fun Fun Fun bit of trivia, I struggle to believe that it really was the first.
However, despite having a reasonably sizeable collection of pre 1964 literature and film about the 500, I can't actually find anything to disprove it.
Can anyone else?

Oldest use of the exact phrase 'Indy 500' on Newspaperarchive.com is October 28th 1954 in the Hayward Daily Review.

Fun, Fun, Fun was apparently recorded on 1st Jan 1964, so presumably written before that.

And coincidentally, the T-bird that her daddy took away went on sale just six days before the oldest use of the exact phrase 'Indy 500' on Newspaperarchive.com.
