Also the armco barrier is now about 2 m away from the trees instead of quite close to them, so there is more room for deformation.

There was literally no room for deformation there last year. The trees had almost grown into the armco.

I took some photos after the race, just because it was so obvious!

Anyway, here are a couple of vids from test-day that has been doing the rounds on other forums

I think I remember reading that there's also a Tecpro barrier installed in front of the tyres and the armco at the spot where Simonsen lost his life (I'm not 100% certain on that, but it rings a bell, Tecpro being the stuff that Maldonado crashed into at Monaco last year after his crash with Chilton where the Tecpro barrier basically wrapped around Maldonado's car)

I think the tecpro is only being used at the entry to the Porsche curves along with the tyre barriers being increased from 4 to 6 rows deep. Just tyre barriers at Tertre Rouge, they don't really have the space to put in more than that before it starts encroaching on the track, unless they decide to cut down the Poplar trees.

Supposedly big news from the ACO press conference on race day. Return of a team, not sure who.

Smart people are saying Ford (Ferrari and Mclaren will join when the ACO mandate production car silhouettes for the prototypes), but whether that's an EcoBoost LMP, a GTE Mustang or Garage 56 Daytona Prototype, no one's ventured.

BMW's the other name that is refusing to go away.

I'd wager that McLaren/Honda is the most likely, on the basis that there are reports such a car has been in the pipeline for a while.

Radio Le Mans' previews for each class in the race:

Even more excited now. Luggage almost packed, flying out tomorrow morning.

And in other news, Millennium Racing's single entry withdrawn from the race. Down to 55 cars.

(This entry was readmitted to the race to replace the Lotus after it withdrew initially, but looks like their backers were on a par with Quantum's investment in EnstoneF1, i.e. only words.)

Heard in LMP1 preview

Graham Goodwin indicated that the Garage 56 entry will not disappear and we are likely to hear something "extraordinary" being announced leading up to the race. Exciting

Oh, and have a great trip Vic!

Dutch 'RTL GP Magazine' just posted this on their Facebook page:

'Breaking news.

Breaking news.

Coming saturday, Fernando Alonso will wave the starting flag for the 24 heures. A litttle bit strange, isn't it?

Not when you think about Ferrari announcing their comeback to Le Mans this weekend, starting in 2016 or maybe even next year already from box 56!
According to the latest rumours (thanks to John Bosch for the tip)
Hopefully to be continued.

John Bosch (and the main editor of the magazine, Mark Koense) ran a Ferrari in GT1 back in 2004 at Le Mans.

Well its not really breaking news as I think it was released about a week ago but maybe its connected to Ferrari making a return to Le Mans? - we will see.

Looking forward to the announcement at the weekend :)

The 'Breaking news' part was about the possible announcement of Ferrari, not about Alonso. :)

Would be great to see Ferrari coming back.

ahh, OK - fair enough  - although it might be a bit early to be 'news' when just speculation. Would be great if it is Ferrari entering an LMP1 car, its a great name that can only add to the series.

Supposedly big news from the ACO press conference on race day. Return of a team, not sure who.

My prediction is that WEC is going to boom in popularity over the coming decade.

There is already prestigious manufacturer depth in LP1, serious credibility in the manufacturers and garagists through the classes and with rumours of another manufacturer possibly at LP1 level, I think with its far more relevant, challenging, open and cost effective rules, this won't be the end of it - quite the opposite - it becomes increasingly more enticing for new brands. I can well imagine another half a dozen manufacturer entries over the coming years - it seems totally plausible to me that any of the names mentioned - McLaren, Honda, BMW, Ferrari, Ford... could be interested.

I'm super excited about this years 24 and I think its the start of a golden era.

Most of the last week has been saying basically 0-10% chance of rain from today right through until Monday. However, glancing now, most forecasts I'm seeing are indicating anywhere between a 40-80% chance of some rain on Saturday............

With regards the announcement, maybe a Ferrari LMP1 return is the reason Alonso will be waving the Tricolour on Saturday afternoon......

I think you're right - and hope you're right. Especially as other FiA series seem hell bent on destroying themselves.

That time of year again, another attempt at a 24 hour TV marathon. Didn't quite manage it last year, although at least Sky+ enabled me to watch the entire race in between sleep breaks. Hope to get there in person one day, haven't yet been able to talk any of my mates into it (their knowledge of motorsport probably extends to a bit of F1), at some point I might just say to hell with it and make the trip solo.

Wait what?! has this actually been suggested? Or are you saying that'd be the only way they'd come in in your opinion? Getting nightmares of "Corvette DPs" now

Red flag, huge crash for Loic Duval in the #1 Audi in the Porsche Curves, rear of the car completely gone apparently, been up into the fencing by the sounds of it (I haven't seen it, going on what Radio Le Mans are saying).

I think WEC will boom, but not in popularity with fans, WECD fans are a special breed and tend to rotate around this rcae and a few others.

The manufacturers like it, but only really like Le Mans, not the rest of it. The rest of it is proving ground for Le Mans, ie Sebring, Spa etc.

And for the majority of spectators too, no other races are at all interesting, for some reason this race seems to be the only one that matters for thousands of race fans.

I am sure WEC will continue to be important to them, but I can't see it rising in popularity for fans simply because it is really not that appealing, the races are too long, you can't see the drivers and frankly, unless you know whats going on, have a radio, its pretty dull!

An ambulance appeared to be on scene, but for an accident that big that's standard practice I think.

I suspect he is out of the car and in the ambulance.

The barrier appears to have taken a hefty hit.
