What happens if on his 2nd run Hamilton suffers a suspension problem which puts him into a barrier? Rosberg is denied a chance to beat Hamiltons best time but that's ok because Hamilton will be punished with a grid penalty.  :well: Absolutely no fault of Hamiltons but he's penalised for a car issue.

You win and lose as a team. Drivers get penalties for engine, gearbox and pit stop problems when they are not the drivers fault.

I think the scenario you mention is preferable to a scenario where a driver ruins others laps on purpose.

True, I hadn't thought of that. It just seems bit mean if a driver pushes to the max to get pole but ends up losing not just the lap they're on but a significant number of places if they make a mistake. The main benefit of the proposal though is that it takes out the subjective nature of the decision to penalise. Not sure how happy Bernie would be about it though...   ;)

What would happen if Hamilton takes pole in the early stages of Q3 in Canada, only for him to come out on his second run ahead of Rosberg and lose the rear end into the hair pin only to ruin Rosbergs last chance for pole, which at the time looked good enough to steal it from Hamilton?

Then some here will moan that it is a s#!( rule and that it should be scrapped... unsurprisingly it will be some of the knee jerk lot.

Given the FIA's proven ability for drafting regulations with more holes than a block of gruyere cheese - I can only see such a regulation causing vastly more problems than the two (only one proven) situations it is supposed to prevent. - so I guess I should vote for it to go ahead - at least then the s**t storm on here after each GP will liven up the break between races
