Hard to believe that the guy in the Penske car that did not finish 1st or 2nd was the same guy that was sparking his car off the walls on the way to a pole run 15 years ago.

JPM didn't seem to be able to last more than 15 laps without a tyre change. Same deal as at St Pete perhaps, setup\driving style burning up the tyres.

Don't think he'd make it in today's F1.

I was a fan of JPM. Huge fan. Now he is dead for me. He doesn't have the fire anymore. I think during his time in NASCAR he's gotten too comfortable. He doesn't push himself anymore.
Just listen to his pre-season 'I just need a winning car' claims. That's victim mentality, pure and simple. "My results suck, but I'm not responsible, it's the car or it's the team", blah di blah. Well, now his team has just finished 1-2 and he was nowhere.
Admit you have problems, Juan. It's time to stop hiding from them. [yes, I know he won't read this.]
Cheers all

Juan was coming out of the corners and lighting up the tyres. One of the commentators said that he can't drive like that for long - the tyres won't last. But that's exactly how he drove in F1. I guess he is doing the same now.

I think that's why he struggle in NASCAR. He over drives the car, and it doesn't work.

He'll have to drop his stock car habits for Texas, you can't dirt-track an Indycar around that place

I have more faith on Montoya doing well on the ovals than on the circuits.

Worth pointing out that his only truly bad weekends have been at St Pete (re-debut) and Detroit. Montoya was going well Barber till he fell off the road in the wet, on the Indy road course he was tearing through the field and he could've won the Indy 500 without his pitlane speeding.
Not that any of those are excuses, but it's a waaaaay gross oversimplification to say he's been nowhere. His attitude has also been very impressive. Very much not an over-entitled, I'm-the-champion-and-I'm-too-good-for-all-this performance. But all things considered I'd still like to see Penske hire someone in their twenties.

So far I've been impressed by some of the rookies this year.
Lotion and Munoz some to mind.
Pretty darn good rookie class this year, particularly if you count JPM amongst them.

That's exactly how he drove Indycars until 2000.
Remember Juan's pole at the same Detroit in 1999.
"Montoya, apoiando-se en las paredes, por cima de los 280 km/h"
"Montoya, banging the wheels on the walls, over 280 km/h"
Track record broken. 2.65 V8 Turbo engines with 200bhp more than we have today. And tires were not chewed.

I'm a bit disappointed w/ JPM's comeback, as well, but I think he'll come around before the end of the year.

This - hes been quick most of the time.
I think he is just super eager to get to the front .. probably needs to calm down, and it will come to him.

That was then, this is now. Have to drive what you have, not what you had.

The weight issue was in qualifying for race 1.

If you get caught with an out-of-spec car in qualifying, why don't you get punished at the time. You know, back of the grid and stuff.
Not half a week later and a monetary fine. I'd pay a 50k fine if I could run underweight(I don't think Penske were pulling a performance trick, probably just an accident).

Now there is a title you don't expect to see. The joke just writes itself.
