Doesn't that new autonomous car Google demo'ed on 60 Minutes this week (and which Roush is building, I'm told) look almost exactly like the Cyclops Stan Mott used to draw and write about in Road & Track in the 60's?  Go to http://sbiii.com/Cyclops/cyclops.html for a look.

Performance of the Googlemobile appears to be similar to the Cyclops.

The motto of the Automobili Cyclops SpA was:  Some said "it couldn't be done"; some said "it was too stupid to do"; some said "we'll do it anyway"--That's us!

Sounds about right.

Ah, the Cyclops sagas on the pages of R&T.  Remember them well.  :)

I remember having nightmares about them - all going over the hill like little lemmings - so sad.

The long running Cyclops saga in Road & Track was a delight. They must have run articles for some 15 years or so, a couple a year at the beginning, then slowing to maybe once a year until it stopped. I remember such articles as Cyclops taking on the Targa Florio and Le Mans, where the "FIA suitcase" doubled as an air brake. They even built one and ran a road test of it.Built by Piero Martini, bodywork made out of old Cinzano signs, ah, those were fun times!

Wish Road & Track was as much fun today...

But where does it live?

That doesn't look like the original (perhaps a Mk II?) so there must be an interesting story to tell Zooom....

How did you ever get it to pass the US crash tests? Oh, it's more than 25 years old or brought in for show only.

CYCLOPS LIVES!!!!!!!!

ZOOOM

This was taken after one of the practice sessions at one of the F1 races at Indianapolis. We were just relaxing at the motorhome when I looked up and this guy was driving by with a Cyclops on a small trailer. All of us old farts recognized it right away. The younger "dudes" had no idea what it was. The guy built it from scratch. It used a 250 cc motorcycle engine. Several years earlier he had taken it to the USGP at the Glen. They were so amused they actually presented him with a USGP scrutineering sticker which the Cyclops proudly displayed...

That just blows me away!!!!!!

But I can't understand why he didn't get first and second place in the race?

It was 2005 and the Cyclops was Michelin shod.

The Cyclops was at Amelia Island a couple of years ago and I believe Stan Mott himself drove it up the fairway to accept an award.
