First of all as a new member can I say a big 'HI' to everyone.

Last year I was lucky enough to purchase a 500 Sparton race bike project.  There is not much information to be found on the interweb about these rare machines.  As far as I can research only about twenty were built and I doubt more than half that number exist today.

They had a number of notable race successes including coming first and second in the 1976 North West 200.  Spartons ridden by Martin Sharpe and 'big' Frank Kennedy.  I thought I had found most of the infomation I could, including several more owners in the UK and Europe and previous owners of Spartons until a couple of days ago I got a phone call from local legend and club racer 'Kev the rev' Kevin Richards.

I bought a TZ350 from him a few years ago and we bump into one another now and again at shows and bike races.  He had seen my advert to sell the TZ as I need the money for the re-build of the Sparton.

To my amazement he told me he used to race a Sparton 500 for Halletts of Canterbury.  This led me to have another dig and I found a reference on this forum.

A photo was posted in 2006 on the 26th November by 'Picblanc', the photo was taken by well known race photographer Graham Etheridge.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has any information at all and especially any photos of Kevin or Sparton 500's, possible leads to information or any spare parts would also be very helpful.

The bike Kevin raced for Halletts was the very one Martin Sharpe won the North West 200 on in '76 and I have reason to believe I may have this bike.

please post on the forum if you have any information at all and I will get back to you.

Holding my breath,

Tony.  :drunk:

Hi tonyed,  yes my Sparton is one of the ones being restored on the 2stroker forum.  I found most of my information here and tracked down present and previous owners of a few bikes.

I closely followed the one restored in Holland by Hydroleo which is now largely done.  He and i have swapped a lot of information.  I know of a couple in Europe, one in a Seeley frame and a couple in the UK

There was a photo of Kevin in the 2006 thread which has now been deleted, I would love to get a copy of it.

Do you have any pictures of the 500 Crescent, I would love to see them.

Tony.

Neil Mason from Shildon, Co.Durham raced one around '81 ish, it had a monoshock arrangement with the unit on one side of the arm. I believe he was sponsored by Sparton on it to do a few nationals and clubbies.

Wow picblanc, exactly what I was looking for, thanks very much.  All this information gets me nearer to finding the history of my bike.  How do I post pictures on this thread ?

Regards

Tony.

Hi greg1953,  thanks for the info, I think I have a picture of the single sided shock Sparton, I think it may have had a Harris frame, not sure.

You have to use a photo hosting site, I use photobucket, its free if you only post a few pics on tinternet, I pay a yearly subscription because of the amount that I have on the net. If you download your pics to a host site get back to me & I will run you through the next stage! :) It sounds complicated but once up & running its easy, if I can do it anyone can, having said that a few cant get it to work but I think that is due to the systems on their pc's?

Tony.

I'm fairly certain Neils had a tubular Spondon frame which was the "Sp" in Sparton, it had the De - Carbon unit on the l/h side, the same unit used by Harris on their frames and monoshock conversions.

If you have this coding box available when you see your photo? then right clic the bottom one img coding & paste it on your forum post, it may not show up on there when you post it, you have to refresh the forum page & its there, it is for me anyway.

With picasa3 it might be even simpler, it might have a share option button?
