Speaking of fast engine procedures - I seem to recall reading in the 1970's (I think) that there was a fad in NASCAR for changing the engine during a race. It seems a bit unbelievable but I think they were taking about two minutes to change the engine. It was made illegal fairly quickly. It takes me about a week to change an engine.

Sprintcar teams do them between heats. 15-20 min. Though the replacement is complete with oil tank, injection, drives etc. Though done in normally dirt pits with a crane off the back of the truck is still good going. Especially as most of the helpers are unpaid. Even on the big teams.

Yeah right, that is a standard Jeep,, not!

I am not sure I'd take that Jeep off-road......

Didn't Audi engineer quick change engine and gearbox for Le Mans a few years ago - run them hard for 1/3 or 1/2 the race and then change them out?

 

A practice which has since been banned.

Under a red light I have seen them change the top wing, front wing and front axles as well as the driver! That still amazes me!

Something that pisses me about Sprintcar Racing actually. Though I believe more recently there is far less of open reds. Though it still takes WAY too long to restart them every few laps. Like 90 min 30 lap races with average 15 sec laps!

I still like watching them race, but restart,,,often,,, sorry I am over it!

At LeMans in 2000, in the middle of the night I watched the Audi guys change the transaxle (in modular fashion, essentially everything aft of the flywheel) in six minutes. 

 

 

Then I walked down to the Cadillac garage and said, "You guys are so f**ked."

I'd say that you were lucky that a dozen of those Caddy boys didn't come after you with a MIL pump action 12 Gage

The Cadillac LMP program was the classic case of totally misjudging the scale of the effort required.

The compere for you non Aussies is a sometime Supercar driver. Grant Denyer. A TV host that can do a decent job making up the numbers.

Lee, I'd say that its not just Grant Denyer (remember him?) that can do a decent job making up the numbers, but V8 Supercars themselves. Their spectator attendance figures for a race meeting are legendary.
