ADAC Zurich 24h-rennen, 24 hours of Nürburgring 2014

_dsc2583E3BFC48F9AAA489D9F11E6B5.jpg

It's round 2 of this seasons super endurance double header at THE most gruelling circuit in the world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

No less than 175 cars are entered and a whopping 31 of them are GT3-spec endurance monsters! In a healthy mix of Aston Martins, Porsches, BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Mclarens Ferraris and Nissans, By far the most varying GT grid on the planet.

Apart from that there is the Endurance Specials in a sort of "race-what-you-bring"-mentality. Here we see all kinds of cars, from MINI Coopers to Sciroccos and a true 24h legend, the foxtail Opel Manta!
Manta-Body.jpg

The race at the Nordschleife last year was stopped for 7 hours because of heavy rain during the night, and was later won by the Black Falcon Mercedes SLS. One of it's drivers was the late Sean Edwards, who we this year will remember for his heroic drives at the legendary track.

Rest in peace Sean.
sean_edwards_1.jpg

Anyway, if the race isn't stopped and is run for the full 24 hours, we are in for a LOT of action filled hours in front of our telly or computer screens, this really is one of the greatest races of the year!

Watch this brutal lap in the rain by Leh Keen!

My favourite race of the whole year - even above Le Mans.....

A shame Manthey haven't got their A team cars & drivers...but understandable due to running the 991 GT3 RSR in the WEC.

Currywurst? That tastes great, but remember this: if you get currywurst, you better like ketchup, as you might end up with half your meal being ketchup. (Happened to me in Berlin)

Is there any info about TV broadcast? Will it be like last year?

Last I knew Sport1, which is a German station that broadcasts free to air on satellite, had the rights through to 2016. So I will watch that, with Radio Le Mans commentary. In previous years there has been no UK broadcaster for this event. I'm not sure if there will be a legit stream, seeing as most of the world appears not to have a traditional broadcaster showing the race. You would think it would be in the organiser's own interests to make some sort of coverage available. ..

I can't wait, one of the best events of the year. Also, I could go some currywurst right now.

From memory (and mine is extraordinarily unreliable) the website had a live stream.  Possibly here:  http://adac.24h-rennen.de/live

There is normally a live stream on the website, plus Radio Le Mans will cover it. During the night they have a static camera on the pit straight.

I have never followed this race (or series) but after such a great Le Mans race and thanks to the helpfully provided information and links to coverage, I will definitely be tuning in.

Bring on another 24 hours of racing

The only PROPER endurance race, none of the noncy flashy lights,t rack as wide as an airstrip nonsense here.

Having driven the place a few times now, anyone who can manage 24 hours around here without being hit, and especially able to win desreves far mroe plaudits, money and media space than winning the damn French race.

This is what endurance racing should be about.

NAd for some reason is far more appealing as a fan concept too

Sport 1, the German TV station, will be showing the complete race in a live stream on their website. The URL they are advertising is: http://www.sport1.de...motorsport/vln/ . Their TV coverage will only be 15 hours live.

Among your many whiny reasons you didn't like le Mans was because it goes on too long, yet you like this race because it goes on so long...

I just wish for this race to not get extremely much more 'professional'. I feel it's lost a bit of the charm lately, with so much professional entries, fewer entries and higher costs.
The chance to build and race that Mazda 626 me and some racing mates had planned to do, have effectively been thrown out :/

Oh well, it's still gonna be awesome! :)

Based on my experience in 2012, don't use the official parking. It was about €13 a day from memory, to park quite a long way from the main entrance. You can park in the sidestreets in Breidscheid (or, on Sunday, in the supermarket car parks) which is handy for watching at Breidscheid, for setting out on foot towards Flugplatz, and for the free bus that takes you back to the Grand Prix loop. Also from Breidscheid, if you head up the L10, which is the road opposite the Aldi car park, and drive up the hill, you'll come to a place where you can park just off the road, and from there you can walk to Carrousel (it's a fair old walk, but well worthwhile). And you can park on the verge next to the road that runs parallel to the Dortinger Hoer, but do that at your own risk, as the ground can be extremely soft, and you can't leave any wheels on the road or you'll be towed away.

All-Star Nissan Drivers Take On The Nurburgring 24 Hours
20 June 2014

Gpu30bo.jpg

All-star global line-up of Nissan drivers ready to take on one of motorsport’s biggest challenges.

Nissan heads ‘home’ this weekend to the Nurburgring, the scene of the manufacturer’s volume production lap record and the track where the GT-R is developed. With an all-star international team of drivers, competing in Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3s this is Nissan’s biggest assault on the Nurburgring 24 Hours in recent times.

Nick Heidfeld, Florian Strauss, Lucas Ordonez and Alex Buncombe will race the No.80 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3, which celebrates Nissan’s 80th birthday.

German ex-F1 racer Nick Heidfeld has competed at the Nordschleife before so he is fully aware of the challenges presented by the track known as the ‘Green Hell’.

“The Nordschleife is one of the most difficult circuits to learn,” said Nick. “I did this race two years ago and I thought I could come back this year and pick up where I left off. That is not the case with the Nordschleife! It is so long and has so many corners and blind spots. Usually at a race meeting you go out and do five or six laps to get a good feel for the track, then you can start with setting up the car. It’s a long lap here and there are three other drivers in the car so it’s a case of ‘right, everybody gets two laps’! On the other hand this is part of what makes the ‘Ring so special.”

Is this the first pole for a McLaren, on a track that includes the Nordschleife, since 1976?

THe race at Le Mans has too few cars in it, is on a dull, ininspiring track, and is predictable to the core.

#

the 24 hour sof Nurburgring I would argue takes more skill, more driver ability, more patience and more co-operation between drivers.

It's really that simple

Kevin Estre and McLaren Shatter Nurburgring 24 Hours Qualifying Lap Record
20 June 2014

5f3CL9r.jpg

The lineup for the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring has been set.

During Friday's Top-30 Shootout at the Nürburgring, Dorr Motorsport's Kevin Estre threw down a time that no other team could match. His lap of 8:10.921, is the fastest ever in qualifying for this event, which has taken place since 1970. He will share the car with Peter Kox, Tim Mullen and Sascha Bert in their search for victory.

This marks the first Nürburgring 24 pole for both Estre and the McLaren MP4-12C. The No. 25 BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc GT3 machine of Maxime Martin came the closest to the blistering fast MP4, but he was still 2.576 seconds adrift of the pole lap.

Christian Mamerow drove the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 to third on the grid, followed by the No. 14 Black Falcon team. Their No. 9 Mercedes SLS AMG took overall honors in 2013. BMW rounded out the top five with Dirk Werner in the No. 19. The session ran without incident.

This grueling 24 hour endurance race on the Nordschleife will get underway at 4pm local time tomorrow.

and MotoGP, and Moto2, and WRC, and ad infinitum...

There may be a pattern there, but it's not for me to say.  Besides I have better things to do, such as figuring out what 4pm 'ring time is in Canuckistan, and then figuring out how to watch that + some F1 + some footbrawl matches + get a ton of work done over the weekend.

Fair enough

Judging by the one or two likes I have had on that post, I would not say my opinion of the French race is totally singular, a few people also agree.

But it seems I am in the massive minority, and the even smaller one that has the temerity to comment on it.

Fans of that arce are seeminlgfy so polarized is it uncomplainable about.  I disagree and think the arce this weekend is more gruelling, more difficult, more fun and more interesting from a spectators point of view. Sarcasm is rather unnecessary but expected from Le Mans fans

Looking through the entry list is very much a case of "oh so that's what he's doing now!" (Yelmer Buurman, Adam Christodoulou are just a few examples). But what amazes me most is the number of 2 driver teams! Having just 2 of you racing around the nürburgring when most of the others have 3 or 4 drivers is going to be one hell of a challenge. Good luck to all of the competitors and here's for a safe race tomorrow.

It appears so. Estre's in #66 (along with Peter Kox, Tim Mullen and Sascha Bert).

More Skill? I'd give you that. But the rest? No....

Just ask Mercedes at Le Mans.

Le Mans was, is and will always be #1 in 24 hours.

The N-Ring? You would NEVER see a Porsche 919 there or a big LMP/Hybird there. It's only "predictable" because Audi keeps on winning. You take Audi out, Porsche would have won (and could have won) for the first time since 1998.
