In 1955 John Heath drove a Jaguar XK140 in the Mille Miglia, car number 434.  He came in 40th overall, 14th in class.

Can anyone provide any information, please  ... eg was it a roadster, convertible or a coupe:  the colour of the car:  etc   ... or, preferably, a photograph.

I am assuming that it was probably a coupe, as he was placed in the GT and not the Sports class.  None of my reference books on either Jaguars or the Mille Miglia have any detail other than the above, the fact that he drove alone (ie without a co-driver), and his time for the race.

I have a copy of the George Abecassis book A Passion for Speed but it is a long way from where I'm currently sleeping so I cannot check it for details for a while.

If you can find one this info might be within, otherwise I can look it up when I get back which will be about a month or so.

Somewhere, regrettably I don't know how to find it or under what heading to look, I understand there is an Italian organisation which has photographs of all the entrants in the post war runnings  of the Mille Miglia. Anybody else know of it?

as paul notes there is very good stuff in the book "A Passion for Speed the life and times of George Abecassis"

I believe very few copies of this book remain and it is a fantastic book with some marvelous photos.

The XK140 FHC John Heath used in the 1955 was registered [WPH500]

Hi Paul.  It is not a book that I have, and given that the cheapest copy I have found is £150, I don't really want to buy it on the off chance that there is a pic of the car in it (though I am sure it is a good read) .  Therefore, would be very grateful if you could have a look when you are back in the same proximity as the book!!  Regards.  Chris

Hi Sharman.  The only place I know that has a really comprehensive collection is the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia.  Last time I enquired, the cost of a digital image of a car was over £100.  Hence trying other options first!!  Regards  Chris

Hi Terry.  Thanks for the information, confirming that it was a coupe and providing the registration number.  As I said iin my reply to Paul, the price of the book you refer to is a little steep to take a chance on finding a photo of the car.  Regards.  Chris

For the information of fellow TNFers:  The book on Abecassis is still available on amazon.com for a reasonable price-quite how many copies there are I do not know...

I think you are looking for Foto Locchi of Firenze (Florence if you prefer). They are supposed to have photographed all the post war Mille Miglias and the two last ones before.

The website is a bit of a tangle, this link (http://www.fotolocch...=004,018,018001) gets you into 160 pages of MM shots, but they are intermingled with other sports. Good luck and happy hunting.

Great site.  Lots of "etceterini" there.  If you click on "Search all categories", car racing will show up.  Click on that.  Then type in a year (just the year) in "Insert keywords" and the Mille Miglia photos for that year will appear.

TNF strikes again! I knew somebody would have the info.

Thanks for all the replies.  Especially, thanks Fuzzi for the info about Foto Locchi - great site!!  Unfortunately, it doesn't have a photo of the car that I am looking for, so if anyone could provide a scan I would be really grateful.  I want to build a model of the car, so I need some photo references to get me started.

Chris D:

I now have my copy of the book and have scanned the page you require (page 345).  However, harrumph,  I have discovered that Imageshack now charges for their photo hosting services!!  What (free) service are others using?

Also,  the book on Abecassis is still available on Amazon in the U.S.  for $98

I have received my copy and despite the initial listing saying the book is used, the book is obviously new and the revised listing states they are new-and came very well packaged.

David,

Despite my long hesitation with things relating to image hosting, even I have come to terms with the free site http://postimage.org very quickly.

Thank you Stephen!

Well,  I tried to post the link from postimage.org and it simply doesn't transfer--I am logged in is there something else I need to do to post photos with this new forum format?

Hi David.  Many thanks for your efforts at posting the image.  Another option would be for you to send a scan to my email address. This wouldn't share the image, but if any Forum members subsequently ask you or me for a copy, we could provide it direct.  What do you think?  My email is chrisdavies.11@btinternet.com   I am off to Le Mans for the Classic tomorrow, so emails over the next week or so will depend on wifi hotspots in cafes etc.  Chris

David,

Obviously Chris is now sorted, but for postimage I do the following.

1- have postimage and TNF both open & logged in at once (being able to swap from one screen to the other quickly).

2 - then in the postimage screen, left click with the mouse on 'browse' tab - then when the 'File Upload' screen appears, find the image you want and double left click it. Whereby information relating to the image will appear next to 'browse'

3 - my next move is to check that '800 x 600 (15-inch monitor)' appears in the next tab. You can set it to '640 x 480 (for message boards)' if you like, but I've found it comes out a bit too small. Particularly involving text.

4 - click for 'family safe' then left click 'Upload it!' To let it do it's thing.

5 - once the 'Upload Completed!' Screen appears, you can check the image has loaded how you want it to appear and if required use the arrows under the image to adjust to the desired or correct position. Then scroll down to 'Hotlink to Forums (1)' placing the cursor over the URL to the left of screen. This then comes up blue at which point I right click the mouse to bring up a menu. Then it's a matter of scrolling the cursor up to 'copy'. Left click 'copy' now.

6 - next swap over to the TNF screen. Scrolling to where you normally reply. Then simply right click the mouse again to bring up another menu, scroll the cursor to 'paste' whereby your URL code for the image should appear with a left click of the mouse. If you intend writing a caption, simply hit your keyboard's 'Enter' key which will allow a space for said caption. Then you can do it all again for another image if required.

I stress the above is what I do using the computer, for an iPad the basic principals remain with a bit of difference due to the different copy/paste procedures. Now, no doubt someone will come along and say there's a far easier process. But the above works for me, so hopefully it will for you too. Just to prove it I'm about to add stuff to the Elfin Type 100 Mono thread.

Thanks for going to all that  trouble Stephen.  I  have posted numerous images using image shack and it is very similar and I do steps 1 through  6 as you have described. However, now the saved image information will not transfer to the TNF page-nor would it when I tried to post a copy of an Amazon listing on another occasion.  Summat wrong !
