Funny how this crops up when there are Mayoral elections going on in London and Boris Johnson wants to get his name mentioned as much as possible.
Forget it peeps, this is just political campaigning. The idea will be back in bed as soon as the election is over.

Seems like the only new piece of information is that Parliament may pass legislation making it easier to close roads to put on some motor racing.
I'd imagine Formula E and TT-style bike racing will be the immediate beneficiaries.

I prefer a race in Croydon
Nico?

Ah, sorry. I live just over the Essex border, so very much trying to avoid anything to do with the London Mayoral election.

Even Bernie cannot afford to close Central London for five days.

You must be miles over the border if you can't vote. Most of the way to Tilbury seems to get one for some reason.Ah, sorry. I live just over the Essex border, so very much trying to avoid anything to do with the London Mayoral election.

Five days? More like 5 days plus 6 weeks of disruption from setting up the track.
Last year I was at Battersea for the Formula E race. It was only 10min from my house. I loved it the atmosphere but found the race boring. From a convenience point of view, attending a London GP would be a no brainer for me, even if Silverstone is more entertaining than any street circut.

NIMBY wankers.

I don't know what the opposite of petrol head is - but as Chairman of the National Trust, former deputy Chairman of English Heritage and a "professional miserabliist", Simon Jenkins must be it. For a professional journalist his grasp of facts is deplorable: "Birmingham staged a trial Formula One in 1985, though it did not repeat the experience." indeed! The race was of course run for F3000 not F1 and it ran for five years between 1986 and 1990. I guess it isn't just politicians who tell lies to advance their agendas.
Posted 03 February 2016 - 10:57
I believe that is a prerequisite of professional journalism! I wondered if someone would pick up on that one, but it doesn't really mean that his basic point is false. Does an already overcrowded and stressed London need the disruption of a GP? It is a fair point to say that it doesn't even if that makes you a NIMBY wanker. For a professional journalist his grasp of facts is deplorable.

This old chestnut again
http://www.itv.com/n...entral-london/?
Bernie Ecclestone has told ITV News London a Formula 1 race could be held in central London as early as next year.He said it would be "fantastic" to have a race in the middle of the capital, and believes it would be popular with viewers.
OK... then...
The answer is that if it can be done, then yes, we'd love to do it. There is a small technical issue, who is going to pay for it, but apart from that I can't see any dramas.
Not going to happen then.

No mention of him actually being in talks with anyone about this. He's just filling press time - keeping F1 in the headlines, that's all. He says he'd love to see it and the journos contact the DoT for a quote - not the Mayors office. As stated, though, "we'd love to do it" followed by "who is going to pay for it". What he means is "he'd love to hear from someone who is serious about paying for it" (but that's the same for any proposed venue, anywhere in the world).

More like news outlets all focused on London, so lets try to hijack some of that attention for F1.

I would love to see an episode of dragons den where someone asks money for a London F1 circuit
I'm sure they'd not be put off at all by the hosting fee escalator.

Valid point. But in the very very very unlikely scenario all other very much realistic obstacles to an F1 race in London would be eliminated, he would probably have to pay the bill and probably not be able to afford it.
Better they just send in an old has-been Friends actor to do some doughnuts and be over with it.

Well as there's a real dearth of purpose-built racing circuits in the UK, with a handful of lots of exceptions, this seems the most logical option.
Posted 09 May 2016 - 16:03
As with many of his electoral and other promises, our beloved Prime Minister 'Call me Dave' has reneged on the promise to make road closures for motor sport possible. The Deregulation Act was passed, but now it seems that ANOTHER Act of Parliament would be needed. And there is no General Election in the offing, so Cameron won't be interested in doing anything.
Without which, no London GP is possible unless you want to race around a few paths in Battersea Park.
So that's all good, we can hold it at a proper race track instead.

Surely its just Bernie's way to try and convince Silverstone that they need to pay him more money by making up fake competition.

Fair point... Although I think Donington is the only other circuit that really could host an F1 race and given what happened last time they tried to bid for it, I hope they would stay well away. None of the other circuits have sufficient facilities. I would love to see F1 come up to Croft for example, but not sure that the £3,000 Paddock club ticket holders would take kindly to using portaloos and buying lunch at the pie & pea van.

See I look at Monaco and Hungry and think that with a few slight tweaks they could race at Brands Hatch, sure there would be 0 overtaking but would be cool to see them race their again.
No love Thruxton? So many flat out corners the drivers would love it.

Can't imagine Thruxton would want to host it. They can barely be bothered to cut the grass for a BTCC meeting

I would love to see them taming the mountain at Cadwell and rounding Knickerbrook at Oulton but neither circuit has the practical facilities to host an F1 meeting and that is probably of more concern to Bernie than the potential for actual racing.
