I've found another glitch that appeared after the last forum up/downgrade.

A black blob denotes a thread with new content.  A black star denotes a thread with new content that I have previously posted on. Hovering over either says "Go to first unread post".  But, if you click on it it takes you to several posts previously.  It is not the last read post but appears to be what was actually the first unread post the last time you clicked on it.

Has this been reported before?

Are the software experts aware?

Was there any response?

Is there any intention to correct the error?

Bet you the thread contains pictures.  If so, then you're lucky if you end up remotely near the most recent unread post.  And yes, it's been reported in the new software thread.....................with the usual results.

****, man. Around this place and usually on drugs when I am I'm just happy to discover I'm actually in the thread I clicked on in the first place.

When I click the "View New Content" link I often see only new content in the Grand Prix Travelling forum if there's a new post there.

I don't follow that forum. I tried following and then unfollowing it. I've even deleted all my cookies and started again and it still happens.

You'd probably appreciate the comedy styling of a certain Mitch Hedberg. :p

2 weeks and still nop reply despite sending PMs to the powers that be.

It appears that if you aren't using a state-of-the-art smartphone they simply don't want to know.

Bet you the thread contains pictures.  If so, then you're lucky if you end up remotely near the most recent unread post.

The problem here is that you're taken to the most recent unread post, and then after this point the images above that post load, pushing all of the content down (and leaving you higher up in the thread than you should have been. The reason for this is that the images are held on a different server, so the forums don't know how tall the images are at the point when the page is first loading.

I'm not sure that there can ever be a solution to this, but a workaround could be to load the URL again (ie. pressing return in the URL bar for a second time rather than pressing refresh). Now that the images have already loaded, they should be the right size already before the forum tries to take you to the right place.

That's just nonsensical!

Here's a thought, host the images on the same server.

Funny how every other forum on the planet that uses IP Board can make it work.  Stop blaming the tools.

Very droll, young sir, but we older folk believe that when it says it jumps to the first unread post, then that is what it should do.

On some fora which do not have that facility you have to jump to the last post and then scroll up until a post appears that you remember from a previous visit. There are times on here when that would involve less scrolling than using "jump to somewhere well before first unread post"

As for Grayson's explanation, no doubt it is correct but, as I wrote before when we were first told it only happened in "picture-heavy" threads, knowing why is no help to anyone except the software people.

However, if pictures are indeed kept on another server, perhaps we could be enabled to put them there ourselves thus cutting out the remote hosting bother that some of us can't be doing with.

Wot Allan sed.  Plus what is this wheel thing of which you speak?  Who would invent such a device?  I certainly didn't read about it in the scrolls.

Sorry - I didn't make myself clear when I meant that images are on a different server. I don't mean that we host them on a second server, I mean that the fact that they are hosted remotely means that they are on a different server to Autosport.

Sorry - I didn't make myself clear when I meant that images are on a different server. I don't mean that we host them on a second server, I mean that the fact that they are hosted remotely means that they are on a different server to Autosport.

So the unintended consequence of not hosting the illustrations is that when they are imported from here there and everywhere each time a thread is accessed by someone anywhere, the system has to plan and build from scratch (or thereabouts) the thread as we see it. I'm impressed that so much extra processing happens as quickly as it does!

Perhaps we who regard old threads as potentially useful, but spoiled by the phrase "posted image" appearing in lieu of many a crucial illustration, are a minority in the whole set of these fora, but we are probably a working majority in the Nostalgia Forum.
