Hi! I'm wondering why such big diameter wheels where used in the BTCC back in the nineties?

I'm posting in here as I assume there was some technical reason for this. Maybe limited gear ratios or final drive?


Anyways, this is probably a simple one, but I was not old enough to follow motor racing back then and can't find anything online.
