I seem to remember he had an early HANS device on at the time too, voluntarily. I believed that had a large part to play in his protection during the accident, which in turn was a contributing factor to HANS being made compulsory later.

I agree that gravel didn't stop the car but tarmac wouldn't help much more. I thing tire barrier need to be updated. Air fences could be a solution.

By contrast it was the very first thing I remembered. EI can be a right pillock, but went well up in my book that day.

I watched that race in a pub in Amsterdam with the commentary obviously in Dutch.

Seeing the frantic nature of marshalls yanking tyre walls and not knowing what was being said wasn't a good feeling.
