you exaggerate too much, the F10 was actually a really good car, what it lacked in downforce, it made up for in speed. you can easily spin this around and say Ferrari lost the wdc due to alonso crashing at spa, getting penalized at silverstone or goofing monaco qualifying.


I'm not exagerating since those are not my words. They are the words of Aldo Costa. He designed the car and he said it was not quick enough to win the championship. Who am I to doubt him.

It got 2 pole positions all year and only Alonso won races in it. "Really good" is a bit of a stretch. I would say it was the 2nd or 3rd best car overall and not that far off the pace. At any track with downforce the Red Bull's would walk.

i would argue it was second best all season long, 'really good' can still apply to cars that can still win you know.

also, i looked around for a quote from aldo costa about the car being too slow for the championship, but all i can find are quotes from pre season tests. sooooo?

RB6 was indeed a dominant car. however, it had trouble with finishing races.

I would imagine Fernando would do wonderful things with the RB6.


Newey actually said the RB6 was the car with the most downforce in the history of F1.

It actually finished in 33/38 races it competed in. 3 of those DNFs were due to accidents though.

"Let's be clear, we didn't lose the Championship because of our strategy in Abu Dhabi, but because our car was too slow," he added

 

 

you can take his word for it, but common sense tells me he just said that to soften the blow of losing alonso the wdc.

Title is misleading, as is often the case with these kind of articles. Stick to the quotes.

Costa said the car was not quick enough to win the title.

Newey said the RB6 was the car that generated the most downforce out of any f1 car in history.

Alonso was voted driver of the year by the team bosses.

These are the facts.

This exact quote sounds like the car was too slow in ABU DHABI, which probably was the case, since Ferrari was behind both Red Bull and McLaren on that circuit.

The RB5, RB6, RB7, RB8, RB9 cars were all fantastic at times, but not all the time.  The STR3 was not as good as those, but had its moments in the sun in Sebastian's hands.  But it is not the cars that will get the scrutiny from teams - they are not hiring the cars - they are hiring the driver.

 

It is how the driver drove those cars, whether they were good, bad or otherwise.  Did he extract the most he could from them?  The RB8 and now the RB10 were initially a handful for Seb, his RB6 initially unreliable, but how did he handle that adversity both on track, in the garage and in the press?

 

That is how you look at hires.  If you wanted to hire a regular house painter for your ongoing business and you looked at his work, noting that he'd had the use of the most up to date and fantastic tools, which your company could not afford - would you shrug him off figuring he could only handle that particular variety?  No, especially if you knew he'd started out with less fantastic tools and still did stellar work (i.e., STRF days).   You look at the quality of work - was it a slop job? inconsistent?  misapplying the colors? using the wrong techniques? and the quality of business, poor customer or employer relations?  acumen for the business, etc.

 

So it is the same for prospective drivers.  Sebastian is not perfect, but he clearly has a lot of "yesses" that can be checked off in the positive attributes category.   This is true of other drivers as well, but the idea here is, who in this category of drivers is available at the time of need.  I disagree every team will want every top driver anytime - there is a right time and situation for all.  So we have to wait and see what the future holds, but one hears noises, and rumors are never far behind...

I interpeted it as not being fast enough for the whole season.

Whilst the red bull and Mclaren may have been faster that weekend, I think Alonso did a very good job in qualifying, and consequently they should have been able being home the car in the top 4. They probably would have had it not been for the safety car/early pitstop.
