My reference for that chicane cutting is Schumacher in 2006.

De la Rosa is in the quicker car behind, and fighting to get past.

After a few laps he makes a great move, but Schumacher cuts the chicane in the most blatant way possible and keeps going.

The forums on here explode, and Charlie Whiting later says "yeah its ok, its Schumacher and he's driving the Ferrari so he can do whatever the hell he wants" (paraphrased).

Didn't Schumacher get a post race penalty for that (20s, IIRC, next car was much more than that behind).

Schumacher held position only because he cut the chicane, and that's why he got the penalty.

Alonso was not under threat of being passed when he cut the chicane. Hamilton was not attempting to pass, and nor was he in a position to do so. So any gain was a small time gain, which he gave back.

No penalty is the correct call because that's the precedent.

However, I would prefer that there be a standard penalty for that sort of action, such as a requirement to let the following car pass after cutting a chicane if that car was within a second or two and the offending driver was not forced off the track.

Consistency is the most important thing though, so I was really hoping they'd let that one go.

No. he was on **** tires driving under duress from LH and made his only error of the whole race. Nothing gained as he lifted to give back a small fraction of time. Race carried on as it would have.

If it was a wall or gravel he would have lost position.

I feel is it disrespecting the track limits but it's not Alonso's fault the FIA don't want a wall or gravel there.

So, it's up to the FIA to enforce the track limits via penalty, or not, in which case the track limits are irrelevant and the drivers should straight line every turn.
